Guest guest
Post 19 Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, On that krithi starting, "Sree pathayE nama:", let us continue on references in Sree VishNu Sahasra Naamam SVSN for the naamaas 'raajaathi raajaaya namah' and 'ravi kOti thEjaaya namah'. Who is a raajaa? He is king or bhoomipaala. The meaning for raajaa in sanskrit as per Monier Williams is -- rÄja m. (ifc.) = 1. rÄjan, a king, sovereign, chief or best of its kind. See another word indhra which also means "best, excellent, the first, the chief" again as per Monier Williams. So 'raajaathi raaja' means 'chief of chiefs or best of best'. [indhra of any class of objects means best of - cf. surêndra, rÄjêndra, parvatêndra, & c.) And that is what is statd in naamaas in SVSN. [please note meanings given here are as per bhattar] 1. Om mahaa indhraaya namah -- naamaa no. 269 occurring in slOkam 29 meaning: he, of great wealth - one having all round effulgence of highest order - lord of indhra, the king of dhEvaas or gods. 2. Om athi indhraaya namah -- naamaa no. 159 occurring in slOkam 17 Meaning: one who is beyond indhra in knowledge glory and strength. He who excels indhra. 3. Om indhra karmaNE namah -- naamaa no. 792 occurring in slOkam 84 meaning: he did great things for the sake of indhra one who performs gloriously auspicious actions. point when one has to be the lord of indhra, as in these 3 naamaas and excel indhra and has to do great things for indhra – then he must possess abilities far greater than indhra – is it not? Then, is he not 'raajaathi raaja' of thyaagaraaja. Few more indhra naamaas in SVSN are 4. Om upa indhraaya namah or upEndhraaya namah -- naamaa no. 153 occurring in slOkam 17 Meaning: lord who came as younger brother of indhra. 5. Om vaasava anujaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 324 occurring in slOkam 35 Meaning: the younger brother of indhran. [indhra's other names are vaasava, sathakrathu etc] 6. Om kapi indhraaya nama: -- naamaa no. 503 occurring in slOkam 53 Meaning: the lord of monkeys. In the raama avathaaram gods came as monkeys and raama their leader. So raamaa is the indhra of kapi -s. Next on this 'ravi kOTi thEjaaya': [or kOTi ravi thEjaaya – for in Sanskrit you can place words in front or back or other place to a particular word, that liberty is there, and have to do proper anvayam to get correct meaning and to the correct context]. In SVSN there are naamas, which mean 'kOti ravi thEjaaya' - 1. Om ravayE nama: -- naamaa no. 884 occurring in slOkam 94 meaning: as sun sri hari dries up every thing in universe one who absorbs vapour the rasa from every thing. The uththaraayaNa puNya kaalam - the 4th step in the archiraadhi maargam. 13. Om sipi vishtaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 274 occurring in slOkam 29 Meaning: - he who pervades the rays of the sun. - sipi is the sacrificial cow, so the meaning will be - one who sanctified all dedicated offerings in the yajnaas point: that very sun – naaraayaNa or vishNu came to this world as 'raama' sung by thyaagaraaja – he came in same 'soorya kulam' – 'ina kulam' or 'soorya vamsam' or 'dhinamaNi vamsam'. So no wonder raama is addressed by thyaagaraaja as 'ravi kOTi thEjaaya namah' -- for bheeshma in SVSN has so many naamas addressed to krishNa which gives meanings as sun. .
