Dear Smt.Anuradha,

1) In many Aahwar pasurams, we see a mention about 'nappinnai' or 'pinnai'

2) Yasodha had one brother called 'kumbhan' and his daughter was

'nappinnai' (so, she was the 'muRai-p-peN' for Krishna..:-) )

3) Kumbhan placed a condition that only the person who could win over

his seven bulls could marry Nappinnai, which obviously was achieved by

SrI Krishna. This incident has been mentioned in many pasurams of

azhwars.

4) AzhwAn, bhattar and Swami desikan have ascertained that this

'nappinnai' is the avatAram of 'nILA dEvi' thAyar.

5) bhattar's taniyan for thiruppavai ... 'nIla tunga stana girithaDi

...' is based on 19th pAsuram of thiruppavai : 'kuthtuviLakkeriya

kOTTukkAl kattilmel... nappinnai kongaimEl vaiththu-k-kiDantha

malarmArbA ...'

6) 'nappinai nangAi thiruvE !' is also from SrI Andal. Whatever

nILadevi is doing in Srivaikuntam was exhibited during Krishnavataram

in Her role as nappinnai, as ascertained in the above pAsuram of SrI

Andal.

Hope this helps.

Dear Swami,

adiyen recalls that Krishna's sister Subadra was married to Arjuna, whereas Arjuna was Krishna's Aunt's son.

So, for Arjuna, Subhadra was mAmAn magaL ...!

However, those who know bhAgavatham better than me may clarify this point.

Shrimathey Nigamantha Maha Deshikaaya Namaha

There seems to be a divide between North India and South India on this matter. While north indians do not have the concept of 'muRai-p-peN', it is largely followed in south india especially in Tamizh Nadu. The north indians refer to their cousins as brothers and sisters only; even if they are (so called) 'muRai-p-peN' or 'muRai-p-payyan'

In the olden days, brahmins from Tamizh Nadu also did not get married to anyone belonging to their father's gothram or mother's gothram. This is more in line with the north indian practice and is also in line with the shastras and scriptures. Nowadays it is only the father's gothram that is taken into account for purposes of marriage.

Given this background may I ask the learned scholars in this group to throw light on this concept of 'muRai-p-peN' and 'muRai-p-payyan'.

Dear SrI. Srinath,

1) Most of the taniyans dedicated to prabhandhams take cue from an essential pAsuram. Acharyas say that bhattar took cue from the 19th pAsuram, while composing this verse.

2) Please go thro' SrI u.vE Velukkudi swamin's reply to Sow. Nappinnai in this regard : http://www.ibiblio.org/sripedia/ramanuja/archives/apr03/msg00034.html

Dear Sri Mukundan,

On your last point on Nappinnai..

Bhattar in his thaniyan "neeLa thunka sthana...., he talks about Krishna who is sleeping on top of neeLadevi; whereas Sri Andal describes the scene as Krishna sleeping on top of nappinnai in 19th pasuram and maps nappinnai with thiruvE in 20th pasuram. Why neeLadevi is mapped with thiru who is peria piraatti? And why did Bhattar sing differently? Is there any reason? Please englighten.

Thanks,

Srinath

Dear Sri Mukundan, Thanks for sharing the link where Velukkudi Swami has replied. But i have one question there. Swami says that niLa and bHu devis are like kinkaras; But andal refers nappinnai as peria piraatti only as "nappinnai nangaai thiruvE" in 20th pasuram. Can you explain on this or share Swami's email ID?
