SrImathE Gopaladesika Mahadesikaya nama:

Dearest all,

After having tasted and enjoyed the Lord Sri

Ranganathan, AzhwAr feels bad for having wasted all

these years. (more apt for us than for azhwaars).

AzhwAr is the mood of repentance.

kAviyai venRa kaNNAr

pAviyE NnAka veNNi

athanuLLE pazhuththo zhin^thEn,

thoovisEr annam mannum

soozhpunal kutan^thai yAnai,

pAviyen pAvi yAthu

pAviyE NnAyi NnEnE! 14

paaviyEn- I, the one who had committed so many paapams

earlier

kaaviyai venRa kaNNaar- women folk who have the eyes

that conquer even the dark ‘kuvaLai’ flower

kalaviyE karudhi- thinking of uniting [with those

women only]

naaLumaaga yeNNi- everyday as if that was the only

goal that needs to be attained in life;

adhanuL pazhutthu ozhindhEn- thus, I became aged as

well; (wasted all those years)

paaviyEn- due to such useless deeds, I have become

further more paapi (Sinner)

thoovisEr annam mannum- The place where the tender

feathered swans join

soozh punal kudanthaiyaanai – river cauvery surrounded

Thirukkudanthai Lord (is so mercifully here)

paaviyaadhu- without thinking and contemplation of Him

(those days)

paaviyEn aayinEn – I had become mahaa paapi..

paaviyEnaaga yeNNi- I thought myself of mahaa paapi

(is also interpreted herein); Without my knowledge I

had become Mahaa paapi. Due to my earlier paapams that

I had committed, I was thinking of only those women

folks and hence became greater paapi.

In this verse, Thus AzhwAr thinks of the Lord of

Thirukkudanthai and laments over the days of yore lost

in chasing worldly pleasures instead of spending his

time reflecting on the supreme principle resting on

the bed of Adisesha on the banks of holy river

Cauveri. He experiences the mood of nirvedam here. (In

similar lines, Thondaradippodi AzhwAr says: paaviyEn

unnai allaal paaviyEn paaviyEnE.. in Thirumaalai 35th

verse)
