MGV adds - Swamin The uttering of any manthram generates its own power within the body. For example in the sree Vishnu sahasra naamam commentary of bhattar, in section 5, to the introductory portion it is said [page 27 vol 1 of 3 published by delhi sahasra nama sangham] by reciting purusha sooktham any disease can be cured, in particular the urinary troubles. Several fevers can be cured by attending homas conducted with recitation of sahasra naamam. 'Jvara vishEsasya homasthu poorvavath japyam vishNor naama sahsram' For this generates heat in the reciter as well surrounding, and that is why it is prescribed as a medicine during fever. This ushNam will kill that ushNam – the jwaram or heat during the prevalence of fever. Similarly this uttering of praNavam generates lot of heat and that may or may not be sustainable by the ladies during the physical changes happening during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy etc. that is why they are restricted. Any ladies' sin is supposed to be vanishing during her menstruation and they get fresh life once they had a cycle. This is said by bheeshma in saanthi parvam. Further it is said out of any puNNiyam accumulated by her husband, of a lady, she automatically gets 50% of it. So why should they strain and get the puNNiyam. This also may be another reason. So there are several reasons like this and besides what is as rightly stated by our respected anbil swamy. Dhasan MgVasudevan
