Guest guest
Dear All : Quite often questions come up about AzhwAr's times based on Guru Parampara and modern day research . Here are soem inputs . Please feel free to comment . I have also added the dates of our AchAryans starting from Swamy Naathamuni to Swamy Desikana nd MaNavALa MaamunihaL for easy referecne . 1. Pinbhazhagiya Jeeyar 's Guru Parampara ( First chronicle on AzhwAr's dhivya charitams) belongs to the time of 11th to 12th century . He was a sishyar of NampiLLai. He was also a contemproary of PeriyavAcchAn PiLLai and Vadakku Thiruveethi PiLLai . 2. Azhwar's times will vary for SampradhAyic to modern Historical views . The 500 years ranging from 5th to 10th century A,D is the view of modern day scholars . Sampradhayic view places them from 4202 B.C ( Mudhal Azhwars to Thirumazhisai ) , Madhura Kavi ( 3224 B.C) , NammAzhwAr ( 3102 B.C) , Kulasekharar ( 3075 B.C) , PeriyAzhwAr ( 3056 B.C) , Andal ( 3005 B.C) , Thondaradippodi ( 2814 B.C) , ThiruppANar ( 2760 B.C) and Thirumangai ( 2714 B.C). I am more comfortable with the 5th to 10th century A.D dates based on the clues in PeriyAzhwAr and Thirumangai Paasurams and stone inscriptions in the Temples about rulers of Tamil Naadu . 3. Acharya Paramparai : Sriman Narayanan , Mahaa Lakshmi , VishvaksEnar Swamy NammAzwAr ( born B.C 3102 ) Swamy Naatha Muni ( 824-924 A.D) with sishyas of UyyakkoNDAr (826-931) and MaNakkAl Nambi ( 832-937 A.D ) Swamy AlavantAr( 916-1041 A.D) Thirumalai Nambi ( 973-1073 A.D) Acharya RaamAnuja ( 1017-1137 A.D ) Kuresar ( 1010-1116 A.D) Embar ( 1026-1131A.D ) Kidambi AacchAn ( 1057-1157 A.D) Thirukkuruhai PirAn PiLLAn ( Son of Thirumalai Nambi , 11th century A.D, Kali 4134) Swamy ParAsara Battar ( Born 1074 A.D) Namjeeyar ( 11th-12th Century A.D) NampiLLai ( " ) PeriyavaacchAn PiLLai ( Born 1159 A.D) Vadakku Thiruveethi PiLLai ( 12th century ) Nadathur AaLvAn ( 10th-11th Century A.D) YengaL AzhwAn ( 1106-1206 A.D) NadathUr AmmAL ( 1165-1275 A.D) Sudarsana Battar ( 13th to 14th century) AtrEya RaamAnujar ( 13th to 14th Century ) Swamy Desikan ( 1268-1369 A.D) Swamy PiLLai LokaacchAr ( 1205-1326 A.D) Kumara Varadachaar ( 1316-1401 A.D) Brahma Tantra ParakAla Yati ( 1286-1386 A.D)Swamy MaNavALa Maamuni (1370-1444 A.D) PrativAdhi Bhayankaram ANNan ( 1300-1410 A.D) Ranga RaamAnuja Muni ( 16th Century ). Additional details on the SamaasrayaNa and Kaalkshepa Paramparais are available at http://www.ahobilamutt.org under Acharya paramparai . Http://www,acahryas.org also has valuable information . Guest guest
SrI: Dear Sri Santhana Gopalan : You are right ! Thanks very much for your mail . There was a typing mistake with respect to EmbAr's ascent to parama Padham . I typed 1131 instead of 1141 A.D for Embar . His dates as GarudAmsa avatArar are : Embar lived 4 years after AchArya Raamanuja's ascent to SrI VaikunTham. He managed the Srirangam Temple for 4 years after HIs AchAryan's deha vyOham . Proof may be in Srirangam Koil Ozhugu . AchArya RaamAnuja shed His mortal coils while rsting His Thirumudi on Embar's lap and while Embar was reciting dhvayam . Emabar's birth year is given as 1021 or 1026 A.D. The general preference is 1021 A.D , since the belief is that He was 4 years's younger than His cousin , Ilaya PerumAL ( AchArya RaamAnuja) . Sri Kaaryam Swamy of Madhuramangalam Jeeyar at the birth place of Embar can give you more details on Embar : His telephone number is : 984-064-6861 or 924-577-2289 NamO Sri RanganAthAya , V.Sadagopan - S.GOPAL Oppiliappan Sunday, December 28, 2008 12:02 AM Re: The stories of the Azhwars ( Guru Parampara ) and their Dates Respected Dr VS swamin, Adiyen's saashtaanga pranaamams. As I was going gthrough the dates of our Purva acharyas, I was attracted by the two dates, that of Acharya Ramanujar and Acharya Embar. I read somewhere or heard Swami Velukkudi's pravachanam( I am not sure). My memory believes, that after Acharya Ramanujar, Acharya Embar took over the Srirangam namperumal temple administration. If this is so, the dates you have mentioned appear to clash with this view. Kindly review the position and advise.
