Dear devotees,

I have a question regarding Vilvam/bilvam leaves which are mostly offered to Lord Siva, but not to Lord Narayana.

According to Sri Lakshmi Ashttotaram, Sri Mahalakshmi resides in the Vilva leaves,

"Bhaskarim bilvanilayam vararoham yasasvinim" , if this is the case then shouldnt the Vilvam/bilvam leaves be offered to Lord Narayana instead of Lord Siva?

I request the learned members of this group to please enlighten me on this issue.

Sincerely,

Kamlesh

Hare Krishna. We have a list of offerable and unofferable flowers in the pancaratra pradipika. I don't recall the exact page numbers. A rule of the thumb is light coloured flowers which have a pleasing scent. Hope this link helps, http://krishnascien ce.com/Vaisnava% 20Library/ Deity%20worship/ Puja%20book% 20-%20Pancaratna %20Pradipa. htmits an online book, a little hard to read because of the small font size.In the service of Sri Radha Krishna.your servant.Nitya Navina Dasi.

While I don't know the answer that the siddhantha offers, here is what I think on this topic.

The "patram pushpam phalam...." verse in Bhagavadgita connotes generalised take on patram - i.e., any leaves can be offered to him with bhakti shall be received by him. Lord Narayana is all inclusive and pervades everywhere. "matta parataram nanyatkinchindasti...." verse in Bhagavadgita illustrates that he is the primordial chief. Thus it is he who creates everything - be it bilvam or Shiva himself have their source as Narayana.

What I heard is Bilvam is to be offered to Narayana. I notice that Lakshmi sukta also has a verse -- aaditya varney tapasodhijaato vanaspatihi tava vrukshodha bilvaha. tasya phalaani tapasaanudatu mayaantaraascha baahyaa alakshmeehi" connoting that Lakshmi originated bilwa tree and who eats its fruit (bilwa fruit) will be freed from alakshmi (misfortunes). Since it is Lakshmi who is associated with Bilwa it is all the more pleasant to Narayana as well(can we apply kaimutya nyaya here?).

thanks

sukumar

Srimate Ramanujaya Namaha

Regarding the flowers to be offered ,one can recollect the conversation in Sri Vaishnava sampradayam between Sri Parashara Bhatta & Sri Nanjeeyer.

Sri Nanjeeyer:When the shastras forbid offering of thorny flowers to the lord, how can the seer say that any flower will do for offering?

Sri Bhatta:The shastras have forbidden some flowers not because they are not good for the lord, but for the reason that devotee may hurt his finger while plucking the thorny flower.

How convinsing?
