Guest guest
The impact on micro organisms can be felt in experience in that, the idly bater do not get fluffy in our house in hot chennai, making me think that the yeast is wiped off in the air around us!Actually, in the case if Idli, as far as I know, we do not intentionally add any yeast, unlike in making bread. The enzymes in ulandu dal (urd dal/Bengal gram), a component of idli maav digests starch partially and releases carbon dioxide. That causes the maav to raise. Perhaps the harsh storage conditions, poor water quality, may markedly reduce the enzyme activity. There may also be some unintended microbes, as they are there everywhere. Bakers Yeast grows better at 30 deg Celsius and very poorly if at all above 37 deg Celsius. In most parts of India, especially Chennai, it is nitya heena-yagnam. Because it has the atmosphere of warmth (high temperature coupled with humidity) and pogai (pollution). However with our intervention with modern technologies such as electric fan or AC, we can make the impact of this heena (mantra heena-kriya heena-bhakti heena) nitya-yagnam on us and our idlis more bearable! dAsan KST Kumar Doosee <doosee_maamandoour narasimhan padmanaban <npn72000 Cc: Srisathyanarayanaperumal ; bakthi-indonesia ; tiruvenkatam ; iyengarsunited ; parakalamatham ; yennappan; ; desikasampradaya Moderator <desikasampradaya >; nama-singapore ; NAACHIAARTHIRUMAALIGAI; sreyas06 Sat, 14 Mar 2009 3:00 am [iyengarsUnited] Re: Fw: Prayashchitham Except doing Vaishvadeyam along with Pancha maha Yngyam (through Upadesam only) , there is no other Prayashchitham. A gruhastha (the family man) does 5 types of sins everyday. The grushatha becomes responsible for 5 types of killings in his house when he (1) burns the firewood for cooking, (2) grinds flour in the grinding stone, (3) sweeps the floor, (4) breaks the grains and (5) boils water.. In all these acts which are regularly done, many micro organisms and living things such as insects are killed. His house becomes a ground for 'Soona' (killing) or a 'slaughter house'. But in these instances, the killing is inevitable and not deliberately done. So these can be redressed. In order to seek redress from these 5 types of unintentional killings, the gruhastha has been ordained to conduct the 5 great sacrifices, the "pancha maha yajnas", namely, Brahma yagyam (upasana on Brahman), Pitru yagyam (remembering the departed ancestors), deva yagyam (worshipping devas), bhootha yagyam (feeding plants and animals) and manushya yagyam (athithi bhojanam). Apart from the unintentional killings in the course of following gruhasthasrama, any other killing such as killing mosquitoes do invite a sin. The remedy lies in prevention rather than in killing - after they are allowed to attack us. The sandhyavandhana prayaschittham covers all sins and but that does not mean one can go on destroying life (of insects in this context) and seek prayaschittham in sandhya mantras. The sandhya mantras are meant for long life - or the maximum guaranteed 100 / 120 years. Long life is gained through freedom from diseases. The auras destroyed by the sandhya- arkhyam are the disease- causing organisms that attack our bodies all the time and also the sins (paapam) that cause diseases. What is done in sandhya prayaschittham is proetction to one's body and actions. But the the kind of common-place killing of micro life in daily life requires a different prayaschittham. That is told in panch maha yajnas.. To give a scientific example of how killing can be reduced and even be prevented, agni hotra (made easier and possible by the Vedic Research centre in Sholapur) is the best remedy. The simple homa done exactly at sunrise and sunset keeps off many micro organisms from our house. The lizards do not roam in our house. So too the cockroaches. The impact on micro organisms can be felt in experience in that, the idly bater do not get fluffy in our house in hot chennai, making me think that the yeast is wiped off in the air around us! Prevention is better and this homa is a tool for it. The pancha yajna takes care of whatever other destruction we cause to micro life.
