Guest guest
Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, Perhaps all of you may be aware that a new TV serial named 'Jai Sree krishna' is running in Raj Tvaround 7 PM. Some portion is repeated at 10 30 in morning [all ISTime]. Actually this is a tamil version of same serial which appeared in 'Color TV' in hindi. That child artiste who appear as child 'krishNa' simply charms my mind like any thing. Whenever that child krishna appears in the screen and smiles, I lose myself, tears in eyes cover and not able to look further more the serial. And that song of Ooththukkadu venkata kavi only strikes the mind to say ippaDium Or pilLLai engEyum illai inbam tharum thollai idharkku eeDiNaiyum illai Oh, oh, sree krishNa, is it that child artiste that enchants me? or is it that my thoughts of your baala leelaas? Or is it you, who wants to tease me by forcing me to keep my thoughts with you. Thollai inbam or inbam tharum thollai -- Oh my krishna, my lord, bless that child artiste for a long happy life. Now turn the mind on that krithi – again it is so lovely with that simple tamil language. Perhaps OVS was living with the moments of that child krishna to pour out such krithis for us to enjoy. Krithi : ippaDiyum Raagam: raaga maalikai ThaaLam: jhampa thaaLam pallavi: in raagam - dharbaar [see the selection of raagam – royal - majesty] ippaDium Or pilLLai engEyum illai inbam tharum thollai idharkku eeDiNaiyum illai meaning: Gopees say - such a son or a young kid is NOT there anywhere. Happiness combined with pinpricks. No equals for such a happiness or pleasure. anupallavi: porppuyaththE vana malarum pooppunaiyum (bala) raamaa thappidhamaagaadha undhan thambi yenRaal aRam aamO ippOdhE nee senRu engaL mozhi idhenRu endha vidhamO yida yasOdhaiyiDam pOi sollu -- ippadiyum meaning: gOpees to raama - hey bala raamaa – who adorns a garland made of flowers blossoming in forest area – please go and somehow tell that cowherd lady yasOdhaa – that these are our words – he that krishNa – says he is your brother – is it right or dharmam to say so [ida yasodhai – is idaichchi yasodhaa – cowherd lady yasodhaa] charanam 1: (raagam: dhanyaasi) eppaDiyum uri kalayam eTTa muDiyaa uyaram kaTTi oru vaghai seidhu kaaval vaiththup pOna pinnar oppukku uRRa kaavaluDan uRRa thuNaiyaaruDanum thappi yuL pughundha undhan thambi yenraal aRam aamO -- ippadiyum meaning: we tied the pot containing butter at a height which can not be easily reached and left a 'watch and ward' also there in the house. Krishna, your brother, came with all his friends without being noticed by the watchman, and then claims he is your brother. Is it dharmam for him to do so. charanam 2: (raagam: vasanthaa) yaar enRu vinava emmai anjuvOm enRu kaNDu un pEr solli unnuDanE pirandOn enraan paar ingE vandhu thayir paanaiyuL Edhu enil kaar onRai thavirndha iLam kanRu onRaik kaaNum enRaan -- ippadiyum meaning: we asked who is there – feeling that we may be afraid of you, he said – he is your brother, oh raama, and continued saying he came to look for the missing calf in that butter pot. Is it dharmam, please report to yasodhaa. charanam3: (raagam: madhyamaavathi) iththanaiyum seidhu pinnar engaL manam nOgum enRu muththam onru eendhu naangaL muyangi ninRa vELaiyilE kaRRaik-kuzhal paRRi ezhil mikka mayil peeli vaTTam suRRi oru kaiyil kuzhal paRRi viraindhu Odinaan -- ippadiyum meaning: telling all these which are lies, just to appease us he gave a kiss to us, embracing us. When we were taken aback on this, he held his thick pea cock feather adorned hair in one hand and ran away. Now points: 1. May be the translation is inadequate – for when the feelings are heavy, perhaps the language fails to communicate. So try to understand the tamil language to get the full quota of emotions. 2. This is a krithi in style addressed to balaraama – which a variation – for usually the complaints against krishNa will be made to yasOdhaa, the mother. Complaints are made NOT to the father nandha, and certainly not to bala raama, for he is an accomplice. 3. Sreemadh bhagavatham says the goppes made complaints about krishna to yasodhaa in dhasama skandham - 10th canto - sargam 8 – chapter 8 - slokam 29 and not to raama - vathsaan munchan kvachidh asamayE krOsa-sanjaatha-hasah stheyam svaadhu aththi atha dadhi-payah kalpithaih sthEya-yOgaih markaan bhOkshyan vibhaajathi sa cheth na aththi bhaandam bhinnaththi dhravya alabhE sa grha-kupito yaathy upakrOsya thOkaan meaning: Gopees to yasodhaa, " Our dear friend Yasoda, your son sometimes comes to our houses before the milking of the cows and releases the calves, and when the master of the house becomes angry, your son merely smiles. Sometimes He devises some process by which He steals palatable curd, butter and milk, which He then eats and drinks. When the monkeys assemble, He divides it with them, and when the monkeys have their bellies so full that they won't take more, He breaks the pots. Sometimes, if He gets no opportunity to steal butter or milk from a house, He will be angry at the householders, and for His revenge He will agitate the small children by pinching them. Then, when the children begin crying, KrishNa will go away. 4. OVS lean on bhaagavatham to take that point of keeping the pots in a height and both raama and krishna reach the houses with other colleagues etc – see below slokam 30 in same 8th sargam of sreemadh bhaagavatham hastha agraahyE rachayathi vidhim pithhaka ulookhala adhyaih chidhram hi anthar-nihitha-vayunah sikya-bhandesu tad-vit dhvantagare dhrta-mani-ganam svangam artha-pradheepam kaalE gOpyah yarhi grha-krthyEshu suvi agra-chiththah meaning: " When the milk and curd are kept high on a swing hanging from the ceiling and KrishNa and Balarama cannot reach it, They arrange to reach it by piling up various planks and turning upside down the mortar for grinding spices. Being quite aware of the contents of a pot, They pick holes in it. While the elderly gopis go about their household affairs, KrishNa and Balarama sometimes go into a dark room, brightening the place with the valuable jewels and ornaments on Their bodies and taking advantage of this light by stealing. 5. In that line “thappidhamaagaadha undhan thambi yenRaal -- aRam aamO” - OVS pours out his heart simply – hey foolish people, is it right – dharmam - to say that – that supreme lord who is sarva eeswaran – leader to all – to say younger one to you, hey balaraama. Is that right – oh it is absolutely wrong – adharmam to say that. Again it is not his words but sukha 's garga's for --in 8th sargam of 10th canto slokam 15 of sreemadh bhaagavatham sage garga says bahooni santhi naamaani roopaani cha suthasya thE guna-karma anuroopaani thaani aham vEdha na janaah meaning: For this son of yours there are many forms and names according to His transcendental qualities and activities. These are known to me, but people in general do not understand them. - so people say somethings of their choice, which are not correct. That is what OVS also say here – is it aRam – dhrmam to say like this. 6. On this line - vandhu thayir paanaiyuL Edhu enil kaar onRai thavirndha iLam kanRu onRaik kaaNum enRaan – for this OVS perhaps leaned on bilvamangala – that kavi leela sukhar - who wrote krishna karna amrutham – krishna the nectar to ears – to hear – to ear – the ringing sanskrit slokams – yes, a real nectar – Dr. Saroja Ramanujam can vouch for that ringing bells beauty - for leela sukhar says kah thvam baala, bala anujah, kim iha thE, man mandhira aasankhayaa yuktham thath, navaneetha paathra vivarE hasthE kim arththam nyasEh, maathah, kanchana vathsakam mrugayithum, maa gaa vishaadham kshaNaath, ithi Evam vara vallaree prathi vachah krishNasya pushNaathuh nah meaning: hey young boy – who are you – I am bala raama's young one. What do you want here? I came here thinking this is my house [with a doubt this can be my house] that is ok – why did you put hand in the butter pot oh mother, searching a calf in the pot i touched the pot – in a moment dont get annoyed krishna who has such a conversation with a gopee save us. Please note the difference also between leela sukhar and OVS – again that conversation of LS is of a gopee to krishNa direct – here OVS puts it a gopee's complaint to bala raama. 7. On that kissing by krishNa – Subramania bhaarathi says in that 'chinnanchiru kiliyE kaNNammaa' song – 'kannaththil muththam ittaal uLLandhaan kaLveRi koLLudhadee' – on receiving a kiss from krishNa it is like the drowsiness due to wine - OVS here says 'engaL manam nOgum enRu muththam onru eendhu naangaL muyangi ninRa vELaiyilE – naangaL muyangi – muyangudhal means embracing - is it gopees embracing each other? - or gopees embracing krishNa? - ninRa vElaiyilE kaNNan Odip pOnaan – krishNa left – who realised what? It is all ecstacy – no realisation who embraced whom? krishNa left at that stage – that is also realised after a while – that is sure. 8. inbam tharum thollai – oh oh great – how a thollai – a nuisance can yield pleasure – perhaps we have to ask kulasekhara aazhvaar for that – for he only said that – 'yasodhai thollai inbaththu iRudhi kaNdaaLE' in his 7-8 perumaal thirumozhi. OVS changed that slightly - inbam tharum thollai idharkku eeDiNaiyum illai. Oh yes – krishNa's thollai to us is an inbam – for he makes us think of him – otherwise we don't have time to think of him – so evena thollai by him is an inbam only really. Enjoy the krithi once again in light of these points / comments and then you will realise it is inbam tharum thollai any thing missing? perhaps you will realise it once krishNa's thoughts go off the mind due to lapse of time dhasan vasudevan m.g.
