One has to pay a price to get all other things. Particularly if the 'advice giver' is an old person, the receiver will not heed to that advice. And when he the receiver has fallen into difficulties, then only he will think, 'hey that old person advised me in such a way then, but I did not heed to his advice'. That is usual and we have umpteen references in our own lives, plus a number of instances in our puraanams etc. Such an 'advising scene' is elaborated in this article. See the krithi of arunachalak kaviraayar who wrote 'raama naataka keerthanaigaL' on “jaTaayu raavaNanukku budhdhi solludal” - “the old bird jaTaayu advises raavaNa” Dear readers, Do you know what was his age when jaTaayu advised raavaNa? jaTaayu was 60000 years old as per vaalmeeki – just similar to dhasaratha – see slokam ShaShTi varSha sahasraaNi jaathasya mama raavaNa | pithri paithaamaham raajyam yathaavath anuthiShThathaH || 3-50-20 meaning: " I have dedicated myself to the kingdom of my fathers and forefathers according to tradition, and sixty thousand years have elapsed since I was born. [3-50-20] [as usual in all my raamaayaNa articles '3' is aaraNya kaaNdam – '50' is sargam number and '20' is slokam number] vriddho~aham thvam yuvaa, dhanvee cha rathaH kavachee sharee | 3-50-21 part. Meaning: jaTaayu to raavaNa, " You are young whereas I am old, you are an armoured archer darting arrows from an air borne chariot”, So naturally if it is an advise from an old man to the young that will be treated with contempt by the young receiver. So the young raavaNa treats the advice of jaTaayu with contempt [compared to jaTaayu, raavaNa was young and not really young in its true sense. Even when kousalya got married to dhasaratha, raavaNa tried to stop that marriage. Because he knew, he will be killed by sree raama born to that kousalya – ref that article by MGV – available in 'oppiliappan' archives]. Now the krithi - preceding viruththam to the krithi - reads: “thErinil ippaDi seethai thanaik-koNDu pOm aLavil seeRi vandhu pOrinil raavaNaa paththu muDiyum therikkap-puDaippEn kaNDAi pEriyal seethaiyai viTTaal pizhaippaai illaaviTTaal pizhaippAi enru veeriyamaai jaTaayu vandu kiLambinaan budhdhi sila viLambinaanE” meaning: jaTaayu, on seeing raavaNa taking away seethaa in a chariot, warns raavaNa with anger, and advises, “hey raavaNa, see, I will beat you in war and remove all 10 heads away from body so that the 10 crowns will fall away. You will be safe if you leave the great seethaa. Otherwise you are committing a mistake”. Krithi starts as below and as per book - raagam: asaavEri. aadhi thaaLam - but 'vittu vidadaa' is also there in vogue in raagam kedhaara gowLai [sung by MS Subbulakshmi in yester years] Pallavi: viDi, viDaDA sItaiyai, viDu, viDaDA rAvaNA, viDu, viDaDA, summA viDu, viDaDA --- meaning: hey raavaNa, ill fate, leave seethaa, leave her free, leave, leave A: sudu neruppu ivaLaalE adiyOdE vEgaadhE svaroopaththai theriyaamal narakaththil moozhgaadhE adadaa sonnEn sonnEn naduvilE saagaadhE asaiyinaalE kula naasamaai pOgaadhE [viDi viDaDA] meaning: hey she is a burning fire, don't get cooked completely in that fire, without knowing the nature of her, do not get immersed in hell, hey I tell, do not die in the middle, due to desire do not get destroyed with all your clan. charaNam 1: en seidhaai ivaL nanjam enRu eNNaamal Ezhai eLimaiyaaik-kuRiyaadhE en thaai ivaL manam nondhaaL iruppaayO endhan vaarththai kEL muriyaadhE konja arakkar maan kutti enRum raaman kutti singam enRum ariyaadhE kudikkiraai ungaLai vadhaikka vandhaanE avan kolla varum yaanai munnE kallu vitteriyaadhE [viDi viDaDA] meaning: hey what do you do, she is a poison, don't think simple or poor about her, she is my mother, when she is angry at you can you survive, listen to me and do not get broken, you are jumping without knowing all you and those few raakshasaas are calf of deer and raama is a lion among them, that raama is an elephant, has come to kill you all, so do not throw stones at that elephant raama charaNam 2: karththar moovarukkum karththan aaghum indhak-kaakuthsan enRu koNdaaduvEn kaiyaalE nee eivadu ellaam siraik- kaaRRirp panju panjaai saaduvEn paththini thanai ingE vaiththup-pOdaa avan pakkaththil thaanE koNdaaduvEn paaradaa illaavittaal kooraana nakhaththaal un paththu thalaigaLum kiLLip-paththu dhikkilum pOduvEn [viDi viDaDA] meaning: I will celebrate and state that raama, that kaakustha, is the base [aadhi] doer to the trio of the doers [brahma, vishNu, sivan] i will destroy all your arrows [aimed at me] with your hands like the cotton in a whiff of air leave that seethaa the virtuous woman [will be happy] to see her with raama otherwise with my sharp nails will tear your 10 heads and throw in all 10 directions. charaNam 3: kaikkuLLE adakki ikkaNamE naan orumikka urunjuvEn un thalai mooLai karum kaakkaigaLukkum namanukkum unnai nalla virundhu aakkuvEn paaradaa ivvELai mukkaNan varam peRRum akramam seidhaavadhu thakkumO kEDu allavO naaLai mooLai kettup-pOvaai seethai thanai vittup pOdaa dhEvar mun koduththa varam ellaam En kedukkiraai muttaaLE. [viDi viDaDA] meaning: I will suck the brain [with my beak] holding your head in my hand, will throw you as feast to the crows and yama, see, you do evil things now even though you have boons from siva, the 3 eyed, Will it suit you? is it not bad? Tomorrow you will lose your head [viz.conscience] leave seethaa and go away why spoil all things? You fool. Points: 1. We all know the story – raavaNa did not heed to this jaTaayu's advice, and finally got destroyed. But how closely this poet – arunachala kavi follows vaalmeeki is the point being highlighted. 2. Besides that, there is an important point about jaTaayu. When raama meets jaTaayu, jaTaayu says to raama - 'hey raama, you lost your wife in 'vindha or vijaya' muhoortham of the day, and that time siginifies your success and you will get back your wife'. So in those days, the bird jaTaayu also knew the saasthram on what muhoortham will benefit, what is bad etc etc. yEna yaathi muhoorthEna seethaam aadhaaya raavaNaH | vipra naShTam dhanam kShipram thath svaami prathipadhyathE || 3-68-12 vindho naama muhoorthO asou sa cha kaakuthstha na abudhath | meaning: jaTaayu says to raama, " In which spell of time Ravana has gone taking away Seetha, that spell is named as Vinda. If any riches are lost during that spell, the original possessor of those riches will repossess them very quickly. oh, Kaakutstha, he that Raavana is unmindful of that fact and stole Seetha only to loose her.
