Dear Swamins

Adiyen wishes to further add the following

Dharba has to be used in different counts according to "subha" " asubha" karmas

These are abundently available in Kaveri banks. Vaigai banks Thamirabarani banks

There are many guidelines about the use of "dharbam"Sarvam Sree Hayagreeva preeyathaamDasanUruppattur SoundararajanSrikainkarya--- On Wed, 12/8/09, Ram Anbil <Ramanbil wrote:

Dear friend

I would like to add to what Sri Sadagopan Iyengar Swami has written on the subject.

All religious Karmas should be done wearing one or the other following varieties of Darbha (holy grass) says Vriddhavasishta. The seven sacred grasses are vishvamithra, kusha, kasha, durva [aruham], vreehaya [paddy], balbaja, and yava [barley].

The sanctity of this grass stems from the fact that it is one of the items that arose from the milky ocean along with Sesame seeds (Til), and the sacred thread that are worn by TraivarNikas (YagjnOpaveetam) when wearing which we recite the mantra "Yath saha Jam" which means "born along with". (Saha= with + Ja= Born) besises others.

The "Darbham" is the long ones that you put for "Asana", hold between fingers etc, "Pavitram" is the one that you wear on your right hand ring finger and "Koorcham" is the knotted one that you dip in the vessel containing sanctified waters used for "PrOKshaNam" (or spread for invoking deities and pitrus while doing TarppaNam).

They are collectively called in Tamil "Thooya Pull" meaning Sacred grass that grew in abundance at "Thooppull", the bithplace of our Swami Desika.

Daasoham
