Guest guest
QUIZ # 1 Why Lord Ranganatha is called “Azhagiya Manavaalan”? Several Bhaagavatas have responded and some nearly correct too. ========================================================== Answer “MaNavaaLan” means “bridegroom” and “Azhagiya” means “handsome”. So, Lord Ranganatha is a "handsome bride groom". How come? Is he not “PuraaNa Purusha”? Yes. He is as old as time, may be older still. Yet, Scriptures describe Him as a “Nitya Yuva” (Eternal youth) ready and waiting for his bride for marriage. And, as a bridegroom, He cannot afford to present Himself in anything less than perfect appearance before the prospective bride arriving to wed Him! The next question is - “Who is this bride for whom He is so waiting?” Our scriptures say that apart from this “Parama Purusha” all other living beings including males who may masquerade as masculine are only effeminate in their relation to the “Parama Purusha” (SarvE itaraa: stree svabhaavaa:) whose ultimate destiny is to reach Bhagavaan. This is figuratively described as “marriage”. Scriptures also aver that Bhagavaan himself does not keep a tab on certain matters, for example, 1. Groups of His own auspicious qualities (kalyaaNa guNa gaNas); 2. Koorathaazhwan in his Sri Sthavam says even Bhagavaan cannot fully comprehend the glory of Thaayaar; 3. Yet another category is the number of Jeevaraasis (not only human but all living beings). He has to wait almost interminably until the last such Jeevan evolves and evolves over innumerable lives graduating from the lowliest to the highest stage of “Jnaanavaan” as defined in Bhagavad Gita Sloka 7.20 and finally reaches Him! Bahoonaam janmanaam ante jnaanavaan maam prapadyatE/ vaasudEva: sarvam iti sa mahaatmaa sudurlabha:// (BG 7.20) And, for this purpose, He has to keep Himself always trim and keep his bridegroom appearance handsome ever ready to receive every bride - and indeed till the last one reaches him! That is why he is called “Azhagiya MaNavaaLan” He is indeed “a handsome bridegroom – in – waiting!” ================================================================= The write up is based on the explanation given by Sri Parakala Ramanujam Swami of Coimbatore during his discourse at “Sai Charan” old age Home, Adyar about 20 years ago when the undersigned arranged for his discourse as the General Secretary of “Senior Citizens’ Council, South Madras”. ================================================================= Dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy ================================================================ Quiz of the Week # 2 Adiyen suggest the following quiz question for your consideration Why Lord Lakshmi Nrisimha is called "Peria Peria perumal" Raghunathachari jagannathan (rj20036) 08/11/09 =================================================================================== Please send your Answers to Ramanbil on or before Sunday the 23rd August 2009. Guest guest
Sri: Apart from the explanation given here, I would like to mention that Andal married Azhagiya Manavalan in Srivilliputtur and Ranganatha is presented as Azhagiya manavalan in Andal tirukkalyanam. It could be the answer for the quiz.Pl excuse me if I am wrong.
