Dear

sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

Continuing

on aanaka dhundhubhi -- In

sreemadh bhagavatham also, one can find the slokams saying

about the beating kettle drums at the time of birth of vasudhEva --

slokams 28-31 of chapter 24 of ninth skandham --

meaning:

Through Maareeshaa, King Soora begot vasudhEva, dhEvabhaaga,

dhEvaSrava, aanaka, Srnjaya, Syaamaka, Kanka, Sameeka, Vathsaka and

Vrka. These 10 sons were spotlessly pious personalities. When

vasudhEva was born, the demigods from the heavenly kingdom sounded

kettledrums. Therefore vasudhEva, who provided the proper place for

the appearance of the Supreme lord KrishNa, was also known as aanaka

dhundhubhi. The 5 daughters of King Soora, named Prtha,

SruthadhEvaa, Sruthakeerthi, Sruthasrava and raajaadhidevi, were

vasudeva's sisters. Soora gave prtha to his friend kunthi, who had no

issue. And therefore another name of prtha was Kunthi.

Note: from these two slokam references it is clear that kettle drums were beaten at the time of birth of vasudhEva and hence his name “aanaka dhundhubhi”.

Points: 1. Further if one analyses the other meanings of 'aanaka' – it means “a thunder-cloud or a cloud to which the thunder is ascribed” as per dictionary. Since krishna, the son, who is the rain from that dark cloud, is going to strike later through this vasudhEva, the cloud meaning of 'aanaka' is also equally applicable. For krishNa the rain, the father or rain producing cloud 'vasudhEva' is 'aanaka'.

2. Another meaning of dhundhubhi is poison – which is seen above from dictionary. Since that “poison” krishna [for kamsa, sisupaala, et al and not for bhakthaas] is going to come through this vasudhEva, even if you combine the meaning a “poisonous cloud” which is going to pour out the dark coloured rain - krishNa rain - on these dhushtaas, then also the meaning of 'aanaka dhundhubhi' seems fully justified.

3. also note in these slokams, kunthi or prthaa is sister of vasudhEva and thereby she is 'aththai' – aunt - of krishNa, and paaNdavaas are krishNa's 'aththai piLlaigaL' - sons of aunt to krishNa. So it is natural that krishNa helped paandavaas and not duryodhana. [there was a question in other why krishna helped paandavaas and not dhuryOdhana]

4. on the lighter side, vasudhEva produced so many children thru his many wives – apart from the 8 sons thru dhEvaki – may be that also is a reason for his name 'aanaka dhundhubhi' – the cloud - for he rained a population on this earth.

See

slokams from bhagavatham – chapter 24 9th skandham

slokams 45 to 55 which gives detailed account of vasudhEva's sons and

only daughter.

hastha, hEmaangadha and other sons. And by his wife named Ila he

begot sons headed by Uruvalka, all of whom were chief personalities

in the dynasty of Yadu.

From

the womb of DhrthadhEva, one of the wives of Anaka dundubhi

[Vasudeva], came a son named Viprstha. The sons of SaanthidhEva,

another wife of VasudhEva, were PraSama, PraSeethaa and others.

meaning:

vasudhEva also had a wife named upadhEva, from whom came 10 sons,

headed by raajana, kalpa and varsha. From SridhEva, another wife,

came 6 sons, such as vasu, hamsa and suvamSa.

Thru

vasudeva in the womb of dhEvarakshithaa, 9 sons were born, headed by

gadha. vasudhEva, who was religion personified, also had a wife named

sahadeva, by whose womb he begot 8 sons, headed by Srutha and

pravara.

cha mahaabhaagaa thava raajan pithamahee ||

meaning:

The 8 sons born of Sahadeva such as Pravara and Sruta, were exact

incarnations of the 8 Vasus in the heavenly planets. Vasudeva

also begot 8 highly qualified sons through the womb of dhEvaki. These

included keerthimaan, susheNa, bhadrasena, rju, sammardhana, bhadhra

and Sankarshana, the controller and serpent incarnation. The

8th

son was the Supreme lord Himself--KrishNa. The highly fortunate

Subhadra, the 1 daughter, was your grandmother.

Point:

thus you can see vasudhEva the father of krishNa has really rained a

number of children on this earth just around krishNa's birth time. So

krishNa had lot of brothers thru many wives of his father, unlike

raama who had only 3 brothers thru his father's other wives.

How

this word 'aanaka dhundhubhi' is appearing in yoga practices,

what

are the different names of thaaLa musical instruments where we have

this aanakam and dhundhubhi

-

those points we will see in next post.
