                                                                                . Sri Ranga Charanam.

-- Dear Srirangasri Members and Friends,

My Sastanga Namaskarams to our ever Periya Perumal Sriranganthan and Our Periya pirattiyar Sriranganayaki.

Today is the Gokulashtami, the day when Lord Krishna the Guide and philosopher of Pandavas, sweetest apple of the eye for the Gopikas, Author of Holy Bhagavat Geetha  and the Savior of us all.

At Srirangam we worship Srirangam Periya perumal as Lord Krishna and Nam perumal Azagiya Manavalan as Lord Rama.

We would have heard about the story of Krishna being tied with the rope by Yashoda for stealing butter from one of the Gopika's house, which causes a small stretch of scar marks on the Utharubandham (stomach) and the same kind of mark can be seen in the utharubandham of our periya perumal who blisfully takes rest on Adisheshan belssing the people who rush to seek his blessings and this mark shows that our Periya perumal is our own Lord Krishna which justifies the poetic verse " Kannunil siruthambinal kattunda peru vayan "

All the utsavams at Srirangam is based on the Pancharathra Agamam, and according to the Pancharathra Agamam today is Ashtami (Eigth Day) and Rohini Nakshtram at Srirangam.

Lord Krishna's Janmashtami is celebrated at Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple at Sri Rangam, particularly at the Kili Mandapam and Krishna Sannadhi, There you can find lord Sri Krishna with his parents, father Nandagopan, his mother Yasodha. Thirumanjanam and alankaram is performed for Shri Krishna and Namperumal. Krishna and Namperumal are taken on procession in the four Chithirai streets.

On the following day Oil Alangaram is done with Sesame oil to our Ranganathan who strolls through all the four streets of Srirangam along with Ubaya Nachiyar (Sridevi & Boodevi)  Blessing the people. Oil is also given as a prasad to the devotees and this oil is made of several herbs and it is a belief that our Lord krishna resides with us when we use the oil for cosmetic purpose.

Uri adi utsavam is celebrated where our Ranganathan presides over the function, where the Pot with butter is being broken as a resemblance of the Lord Krishna's youthful days when he used break open the clay pot to fetch the butter.

It is believed that whoever prays to our Ranganathan will get all the blessings of Lord Krishna. As we all know,  when we do Charanaagathi, Lord Krishna would rush to help his devotees even in our holy epic of Mahabharata  as he did for Panchali (Draupadi).

" Sarva-Dharman parityajya mam Akam Charanam vraja " which means " Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me " so lets all seek his blessings and do Charanaagathi so that he will take care of all of us.

Please pray to the attached pictures of the Gokulashtami festival at SrirangamVachaka dhosham Kshamikkavum,Adeyen Dhashan!Narasimha Bhattar
