Dear BhaagavatasWe have received Answer for the "Quiz of the week # 8" from several readers. But, the one who gave the correct answer is viji jagan. Besides the above, Sri Kumar Ramabhadran has given another reason.We reproduce both the answers for your information.We go with the answer by Viji Jagan because it is the one that has been mentioned by our Achaaryas during their KaalakshEpams. "While doing Abhivadanam, one mentions the Pravaram, GOtram, Sutram (Aapasthamba etc) , Veda Saakha to which one belongs and is supposed to recite daily (Saakhaa adhyaayi) and then one's given name. This is to remind onself of the glorious lineage to which one belongs and strive to keep up the rectitude of this heritage and take care not to act in anyway that could sully its prestige" At the end of this note, we give the Quiz # 9. Please read the question carefully and send your Answer to ramanbil (NOt the Srirangasri group) so as to reach us on or before Sunday, 4th October 2009. Dear bhagavathas,

About doing abhivadanam to the elders who know us already---

Our family elders used to say, to remind oneself of one's lineage & act which is apt for the lineage. This reminder is to the youngster who is saying the abhivadanam & he gets the blessing from the elders.

From Kumar Ramabhadran

Dear Sir,I may be wrong as my knowledge is very limited. The reason for doing “Abhivadanam” even to those who already know our background, lies in the literal meaning of "Abhivadanam". It actually means "obeisance" ie 1. The act of obeying; dutiful or submissive behaviour with respect to another person2. Bending the head or body or knee as a sign of reverence or submission As to saying arsheya, gotraH, sutraH, shaakhaa, sharmaana is nothing but to identify you and what you follow. (As in astrology, we have jathakam or birth chart. The birth chart is nothing but modern day 'birth certificate'. It was later extended to predictions)We, in modern days, think "Abhivadanam" as "introduction" which is not true meaningWith best wishesKumar Ramabhadran

====================================================QUIZ OF THE WEEK # 9

We know that the PerumaaL wields Sanku, Chakram, Gadai etc. as these are his exclusive privilege. But, how come, that we see “Dvara-paalakas” standing at the entrance of Sannidhis also holding them?
