Answer to QUIZ # 19: and Question # 20

The question # 19 was:

There are at least 8 similarities between Hayagriva and Nrisimha Avataras.

What are these 8 similarities?

Please make sure that you list at least 6 (out of the 8) similarities to qualify your answer as being “ALL- CORRECT”.

The Answer is as follows:

 

1. In both Avataras, since there is the Sambandam of Mahaalakshmi, they are considered “PoorNa Avataras” from Tattva point of view.

2. In both Avataras, there is Sambandam of “Miruga Sareeram”.

3. Both the Avataras are the Aradhana PerumaaL of the famous Mutts/ Ashramams.

4. Narisimha Avatar was for protecting Bhakta Vachanam (Nija brithya bhaashitam) and Hayagriva Avatar was for saving the Vedas.

5. Both the Avataras appeared all on a sudden from a pillar (yadruchaa HarE) and from the ocean.

6. Both have on the nape of neck profuse growth of hairs indicative of majesty.

7. Both appeared to protect their children - Nrisimha appeared for Prahlada and Hayagriva for Brahma and thus became the presiding deities of children and educators respectively.

8. Those who received the absolute blessings of the two Avataras are –

For Nrisimha: Kavi Chakravarthi Kamban (HiraNya vadaip PaDalam) and

 

For Hayagriva: Sri Swami Desika (Hayagriva StOtram)

 

Though we did not receive overwhelming response like we had in the previous Quiz programs, those who have responded have not only mentioned those we had in mind (shown above) but have also provided additional inputs (as shown bellow).

Similarities between Hayagriva and Nrisimha Avataras

1. Both are having Man and animal in merged form [Nara-simha - lion face, man body, Hayagriva - Horse face, man body]

2. Both are worshipped along with Sri Mahalakshmi [sri Lakshmi Narasimhan, Sri Lakshmi Hayagrivan]

3. Both are mostly in seated posture

4. Both are having their consort Sri Mahalakshmi on their Laps

5. Both are "instantaneous" avataars, did not take birth and live like [Rama, krishna etc]

6. Both are for "Bhakta anugraham, "Dhushta nigraham" reason

7. Both of them don't have any parents unlike [ Rama, krishna, Parasuram avataars]

8. Both of them are worshipped by Sri Jeers [especially Sri Ahobilam jeet personal aaradhana for Narasimhar, Sri Parakala and other jeers worship Hayagrivar] / and

9. Another similarity is that both avataars are mainly worshipped on Hill tops temples [sri Ahobilam, Sri Kadigai, Sri Thiruvahindrapuram, etc]

1) Nara Mrigha roopams -lion form up to the neck and human below is Nrisimha and horse cum human form is Hayagreeva.

2) Both forms are in amarndha tirukolams - seated forms.

3) Aavesha avatharams - Impromptu forms not planned previously.

4) Short Duration - Narasimha avathara for one evening and Hayagriva lasting till the slaying of Madhu Kaitabha and Restoration of the Vedas.

5) Two rupams- Both Nrisimha and Hayagreeva have benign and fierce forms.

6) Lakshmi on their laps: Both Nrisimha and Hayagriva have Sri seated on their lap.

7) Chatur bhuja roopams: Both Hayagreeva and Nrisimha have the four handed forms.

 

8) Both Nrisimha and Hayagreeva have their one hand holding Mahalakshmi to represent that the two together constitute the ultimate truth

NOTE:

Item 3:“Avesa” does not mean impromptu

Item 4: Hayagriva is believed not to have disappeared after slaying Madhu-Kaitaba but is still believed to be in the world for our benefit.

Item 5: Hayagriva does not have a fierce form.

The similarities of Swami Hayagreeva and Lord Narasimha are as follows:

1. Both of Vishnu Avatars

2. Both are having animal face and human body.

3. Both will have Mahalakshmi on their left lap and the sitting posture is also same.

4. Both avatars are a short duration.

5. Both avatars are for Raksha and Samharanam (Madhu & Kaidaba and Hiranyakashibu).

6. Both avatars of symbol of wisdom.

7. Both avatars are Symbols of Yoga.

1. Both are incarnations of Lord Vishnu and are widely worshipped in Vaishnavite tradition.

2. Both have body of half animal and half man.

3. Usually both are depicted in a seated posture with four hands, with sankha and chakra in two hands.

4. In both Avataras Lakshmi appears on the left lap.

5. Both are worshipped as Yoga Murthies (without Lakshmi.)

6. Both are worshipped as shalagrama - Murthies.

7. In both instances His appearance and coming to His devotee’s aid was simultaneous.

 

8. Both Avataras are listed in Bhagavata Purana and are also referred to in many other puranas.

NOTE

Item 3. Narsimha does not have Sanka and Chakra. The weapon he used was his nails.
