Thanks. adiyEn has a question over this answer. Did maNavala maamuNikaL swami explain that he meant this for "anju kudi" or it is one of the interpretations of people who came later. Who exactly interpreted like this? Manavala Maamunigal refers to Andal as “Anju kuDikku oru santadii†meaning that she inherited the glory of five lineages (families). What are the five “kuDis†and who are represented in each “kuDi The correct Answer is 1. AyOnija KuDi: Poigai Azhwar, Butat Azhwar, Pey Azhwar 2. Piramban KuDi Tirumazhisai Azhwar 3. Kaariyaar KuDi: Namm Azhwar 4. SEran KuDi: Kulasekara Azhwar 5. VEyar KuDi: Periya Azhwar ============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ======

Though most have answered the names of the Azhwars, they have not given the names of respective KuDis. At the end of this note, we provide Quiz of the week # 21. Please read the question carefully and send your Answer to ramanbil (AT) hotmail (DOT) com (Not to Sri Ranga Sri Group) so as to reach us on or before 28th December 2009. The correct Answer will be published next week. Dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy ============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ======= Answers received: Krishna Madhavan (srirangadesikadasan @gmail.com) The anju kuDi refered by viSadavAk SikhAmaNi SrI vara vara muni are the five kuDi of the 7 azhvArs, collectively, who appeared in before gODAdEvi. (1) ayOnijar kuDi – poygaiyazhvAr, bhUdattAzhvAr, peyAzhvAr (2) thirumazhisaiyAzhvA r (3) kulaSEkaraperumAL (4) nammAzhvAr (5) periyAzhvar Srikanth Parthasarathy (raamaanujadaasan@ ) 1) Mudhal Azwargal 2) Thirumaisai Azwar 3) Nammazwar 4) Kulasekara Azwar 5) Periyazwar Vyjayanthi & Sundararajan (vijirajans (AT) hotmail (DOT) com) Andal was the only girl-child in Vishnuchitha' s father's family of five sons and she brought pride to the family by marrying Ranganatha and making Periazhwar the father-in-law of Ranganatha. (1) The term refers to the mudhal azhwars(Poigai, Bhutham, Pey) Tirumazhisai, Kulashekarazhwar, Namm alwar and Periazhwar Andal born in Periazhwar's garden is hia Santhathi. By extension, she is the Santhathi of all the previous azhwars who praised Sriman Narayana and showed us the way to Moksham asd bte (vale_543 (AT) (DOT) co.in) SRI GODADEVi is the single descendent of FIVE AZWAR families. The FIRST family------ The three MUDAL azwars. The SECOND family-----THIRUMAZ HISAI AZWAR. The THIRD family ------NAMMALWAR and MADHURAKAVI AZWAR (2) The FOURTH family-----KULASEKH AR AZWAR. The FIFTH family-----PERIYALW AR her foster father padma raghavan (padmaviji ) The Santhathi of Anju Kudi: There are double meanings here. Anju Kudi is the vamsam (kudi) of BhaagavathAs (AzhwArs here), who are always afraid (anjum ) of any haani (danger) coming the way of our Lord .PeriyAzhwAr performing ThiruppallANDu mangaLAsAsanam out of fear that there may be some kaNN Yecchil ( dhrishti dhOsham ) falling on the Lord , when He presented Himself in public to bless him (PeriyAzhwAr) at Mathurai . ANDAL is the progeny of that anjum kudi is one meaning.PeriyAzhwAr had four sons already. With Andal, the size of the family of PeriyAzhwAr became Four + one =five. That is another meaning for anju kudi. – (1) padmaviji adds “Answer available in http://www.ibiblio. org/sripedia/ oppiliappan/ archives/ 1999/msg00246. html†(3). Please see remarks below Seshadri Sampath (seshadhrisampath@ ) This verse has two definitions. 1. If we start counting the groups or family from Poigaiaazhvar to Periaazhvar, we can see five groups. Mudalazhvars (Poigaiaazhvar, Boodhaththaazhvar and Peyaazhvar) belong to one group. Thirumazhisai aazhvar, Nammaazhvar, Kulasekaraazhvar and Periyaazhvar will form a separate group each, totaling to five groups. Andal is regarded as the descendents of the five groups. 2. "Anju" means fear in Tamil. Azhvars out of their overwhelming devotion and Bhakthi had a fear that, nothing should happen to Perumal. Hence we can group the entire set of Azhvars as Anju Kudi and Andal as their daughter (3). venkatesan srinivasan (venkat_d7 (AT) (DOT) co.in) The five families -represented as follows: 1. Mudalazhwars (poigai, bootham & pei) 2. Thirumazhisai azhvar 3. Nammazhwar 4. Kulasekaraazhvar 5. Periyazhvar(Thiruppanazhwar, Thondaradippodiazhw ar and Thirumangaiazhwar are after periyazhwar- hence they are not included in the above group) K V Sukumar (kvsukumar@rubiconls .com) A. The Anju Kudis are 1. The three Mudal Azwargal, 2. Thirumazizai Azwar, 3. Kulasekhara Azwar, 4. Nammazwar, and 5. Periazwar. The other Azwars' time came after the period of Sri Andal (5) B. There is another explanation as well. The Anju is taken as the fear of Azwars who were fearing of the wrongs by the demons to the beloved Narayana. The generation of Azwars were considered as Anju Kudi - (meaning fearing the wrongs of demons to the Lord) and Sri Andal Considered herself as the disciple and daughter of all these Azwars. (3) VARADARAJAN VIJAYANARAYANAN (vjnarayanan@ hotmail.com) Mudhal azhwargal, Thirumazhisai, Nammalwar, Kulasekara alwar and Periyalwar Sriram Aravamuthan (vidusri2 (AT) (DOT) co.in) This is a guess:1. Mudhal Azhwargal - Poigaiyaar, Puthathaar, Paeyaar.2. Thirumazhisai Azhwar3. Nammazhwar4. Kulasekara Azhwar5. Periazhwar Srinivasan (srinivas_sgm@ Following were the five “kuDis†and Manavala Maamunigal referred it in Upadesa Rathina Maalai 1. Muthal Azhwars belongs to one kuDi. [Ayonijar Kudumbam]2. Thirumazhichai Azhwar kuDi3. NamAzhwar kuDi4. Kulasekara Azhwar kuDi5. PeriAzhwar kuDiAndal is also considered as "Santadii" for other Azhwars who were born after her (4) They are1. Thondaradipodi Azhwar2. Thirupaan Azhwar3. Thirumangai Azhwar mala srinivasan (malinivasan@ ) 1 anjum kudi -the only girl born to all 10 alwars who always fear that Emperuman will get dhriti dhosham (anjum kudi) 4 2 alwars kulam vellalar, kallar, paraiyar ,panar (untouchable, ) kshthriyar, brahmin (5) in these five anju kudikkku andal became the santhathi and spread the principle of salvation 3. Andal is the only daughter for all 4 brothers of Periyazhwar ( Periazhwar's father had sons) among the children Andal made her kulam shine by the marriage. (1) ============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= Special Comments: (1). vijirajans (AT) hotmail (DOT) com has stated that “Andal was the only girl-child in Vishnuchitha' s FATHER'S FAMILY of FIVE sons†padmaviji says that PeriyAzhwAr had FOUR sons already. With Andal, the size of the family of PeriyAzhwAr became Four + one = five. malinivasan@ says that Andal is the only daughter for all 4 brothers of Periyazhwar (PERIAZHWAR' S FATHER HAD 5 SONS) among the children Andal made her kulam shine by the marriage. None of them is sure about this and have done just guess work! (2). NOTE: Madhura Kavi Azhwar is NOT included in the 5 KuDis. (3). Regarding “Anjum KuDI†(Fear) which almost all have referred, this is NOT correct. padmaviji cites in support that the answer is available at http://www.ibiblio. org/sripedia/ oppiliappan/ archives/ 1999/msg00246. html†(More about this at the end) (4) srinivas_sgm@ says “Andal is also considered as "Santadii" for other Azhwars who were born after her†This is not required as an Answer. (5) This is not the proper classification. Very good guess, though! Regarding item 3 above: chandraparthasarath y Parthasarathy Srinivasan has posted in Srirangasri (Vide Archive # 12299) what he calls “A Wonderful Article about What Is Yagjopaveedha†reproducing a lecture by one Dr. A.S. Padmanabhan (Deputy Director General, Meteorology – Retd) under KSR Institute, Mylapore. The Lecturer observes: “This is said to be worn (Natural Adjunct) By “Prajapathi†Himself

(Creator) “Prajapatheh Yath Sahajam Purasthaath “ The words "PrajaapatE: yath Saha-jam" mean that YagjnOpa veetam was born (ja) with (Saha) with Prajaapati himself. (May be, he also wore it!) NOT as explained by the learned lecturer. The lecturer seems to have literally adopted the meaning of the word "sahajam" to denote "natural adjunct" as understood in what is in vogue today in colloquial Tamil. The emphasis of the SlOka is on the antiquity of the YagjnOpaveetam and not its being “a natural adjunct†The interpretation of “anju KuDi’ as “anjum kuDi†falls in the same category. If Sri Manavala Maamunigal wanted to convey the “fear†aspect, he would have used the word “anjum†not “anju†which means “aindu†or ‘fiveâ€. To take it to refer to “fear†is obviously outlandish and inappropriate - whoever had put it in the site. http://www.ibiblio. org/sripedia/ oppiliappan/ archives/ 1999/msg00246. html

AAAnother instance is the mispronunciation of “VaTa pathra Sayee†which means the one who reclines on the leaf of a

banbanyan tree. Some have pronounced it as “VaDa bhadra Sayeeâ€. There is no “VaDa†and no “Bhadra†in the name! Quiz of the week # 21 Of the 12 Azhwars, only one - third of them were born or brought up in Barhmin Families. Give the names such Azhwars. ============ ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= ========= =========
