Dear Bhaagavatas; My Computer was down the whole week. So, I could not issue the Answers to Qn 28. Now, it is restored. Thank you for your patience.================================================================================Quiz # 28 was: We know that Nammaazhwar slipped into a trance when he was overwhelmed by the easy accessibility (Soulabhyam) of the Lord in spite of his omnipotence (Paratvam) in allowing himself to be bound with a rope by his mother YasOda. There are two other occasions when two Acharyas also went into swoon on witnessing certain events.Name the Acharyas who had this experience and explain the events that drove them into trance.------------------------------The correct Answers are: 1.Ramanuja and AttuzhaaiThe context:The event was when Ramanuja was going for UnchaViruthi used to recite Tiruppavai Paasurams. One day, when he was reciting "Unthumadakalitran" paasuram, as he was in front of Periya Nambi TirumaaLigais. When he came to the door reciting the line "Seeraar VaLai olippa vanthu thiravaai maghindu ElOre emppaavai”, Periya Nambi's daughter Athuzhaai suddenly opened the door and appeared before him. Ramanuja was struck by the co-incidence and for a moment thought that "Nappinnai Piratti" herself was opening the door. This was a pleasant shock for him and he went into a trance for a while till regaining his composure again. 2. Koorathaazhwaan when he was teaching Periya Tirumozhi of Tirumangai Azhwar to a newly married girl, the girl’s husband appeared and took her by hand and led her way. Aazhwaan wondered if an ordinary man could have so much affection for his wife, how much more affection the Lord would have for the Jeevas who are so dear to him. This very thought drove him in a tizzy. The Paasuram is as follows: (Periya Tirumozhi 3.7.1)

“kaLvan kol? yaan ariyEn - kariyan oru kaaLai vandu vaLLI marungul endan maDa maaninaip pOda enru/veLLi vaLaik kaip parra, perra Taayarai viTTaganruaLLalam poonkazhani aNiyaali puguvar kolO?” The context

When the heroine (Here, Parakaala Naayaki) explained her grief to her hero on being separated from him,

he just whisked her away. In the role of mother, the Azhwar expresses shock on not finding her daughter on her bed

but consoles herself that after all it is the Lord who had taken her.

But, then the mother laments: “I do not know if I should call him an “abductor”?

As soon as the black and youthful guy literally dragged her hand adorned with silver bangles, my daughter coolly walked away with him without even informing me and leaving me alone. I wonder if they will safely reach Tiruvaali, their destination. Would it be possible that the two engrossed in each other’s love and being oblivious to their surroundings might miss their way to Tiruvaali? (from the 2010 year calendar (August 2010 page) issued by Sri Velukkudi Krishnan and printed by my printers M/S.RNR Printers Triplicane, Chennai)Some members have provided a few other episodes instead of Koorathaazhwaan episode mentioned above but without mentioning any authority. However, we are thankful to them for the excellent guess work provided by them. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME!===============================================================================

The two Acharyars who had such an experience are 1] Bhagavad Ramanujar - The event was when Ramanujar was going for UnchaViruthi he will recite Thiruppavai parurams. One day when he was reciting Thiruppavai pasurams, he went to Periaya Nambi thirumaligai by reciting "Unthumadakalitran" paruram. That pasuram has a line as "Seeraar Valaiolippa vanthu thiravaai mazhinthu yaloor emppaavai". When he was reciting this verse and Periaya Nambi's daughter Athuzhai opened the door, swamy immediately thought that "Nappinnai Piratti" herself opened to door. This event drove swamy into trance.2] Swamy Koorathazhwan - The event was Swamy Ramanujar want to listen to Koorathazhwan kalakshebam on Thiruvaimozhi. But Koorathazhwan refused to give directly. So Swamy Ramanujar asked two of his sishyas to attend the Koorathazhwan kalakshebam of Thiruvaimozhi and tell him what he has explained. When Koorathazhwan started to give kalakshebam of Thiruvaimozhi, by reciting first pasuram "Uyarvara Uyarnalam udaiyavan yavanavan" itself he became unconscious. This has been informed to Swamy Ramanujar. When swamy directly went to Koorathazhwan and asked for the reason, he told how Namazhwar had described Sriman Narayana in his first pasuram itself. Surprised Swamy Ramanujar, named Kooraser as "Koorathazhwan".

Comment: on 2: This does not seem to be authenticated in any Vyaakhyaanams

1. Ramanujacharya fainted when Thirukoshtiyur Nambi's daughter opened the door just as the acharya was reciting "Undu mada kalitran" paasuram.

2. Swamy Koorathazhwan fainted upon witnessing Swamy Ramanuja bless a dumb man with moksham by placing his (Ramanujacharya's) feet on the man's head behind closed doors.

Comment on 1: It was NOT TirukkoshTiyur Nambi’s daughter but Periya nambi’s daughter. Comment: on 2: This does not seem to be authenticated in any Vyaakhyaanams.

The two acharyas and the events

1. SrI uDayavar was coming for unchavritti to SrI periyanambi’s tirumALigai and was reciting the undumadakaLiRRan pAsuram in his heart when SrI attuzhAy pirATTi (daughter of SrI periyanambi) opened the door. uDayavar had just recited the line “SIrAr vaLai Olippa vandu tiruvAy” and the door opened. Thinking that nippinnai (niLAdEvi) herself had opened the door uDayavar fainted and fell down. SrI attuzhAy pirATTi being a small girl became scared and shouted to her father that he had fainted to which he replied “Oh! He must have recited the undumadakaLiRRan” pAsuram”.

2. The second incident is of SrI parASara bhaTTar, who was asking SrI nanjIyar to recite certain tiruvAmozhi pAsurams. SrI nanjIyar came about reciting the “en tirumagaL sEr mArvanE ennum”. After finishing the pAsuram, SrI bhaTTar asked SrI nanjIyar to repeat it again. This time SrI nanjIyar recited it with a different split in the first line. The first split gave the meaning “You are SrIyahpati, You are my Avi (jIvan)”. The second split gave the meaning “You are my AvI (jIvan) because You are SrIyahpathi”. Listening to the second split, SrI bhaTTar fainted immediately.

Comment: on 2: This does not seem to be authenticated in any Vyaakhyaanams.

SrI kulaSEkaraperumAL also went into such trances when he was hearing SrIrAmAyaNam. First during karadUSaNAdi 140001 rAkSasavadam at janastAnam and the second during SrI rAma-rAvaNa yuddam. But since this of an azhwAr and not and AchAryar, aDiyEn didn’t include them.

Comment: He did not go into a trance. He ordered his army to gear up and march to help Sri Rama imagining that the event was happening just at the very moment.

1. Sri Ramanuja , 2. Vedanta Desikar

1.Emperumanar used to chant thiruppavai always and once it happened that When Sri Ramanuja was going round the main streets of Thirukoshtiyur,he went near Periya Nambi's house reciting the concluding portion of the 18th Thiruppavai verse,

“senthAmaraik kaiyAl sIrAr vaLai olippa *vandhu thiRavAy magizhndh” RaamAnujA swooned, when he identified AthtuzhAi, the daughter of his AchAryAn, with Nappinnai, when she(Atthuzhai) opened the door of her house with jangling bangles to offer Bikshai to RamanujA.2.Swami Desikan, on a visit to Sri Villiputtur, while standing on the sidewalk saw the archA moorthy of ANDAL approaching him, when ANDAL has PuRappAdu on the occasion of Vaisaki VasanthOthsava uthsavam. Swami Desikan's astonishment at this unexpected bhAgyam and his parama bhakthi for ANDAL poured out in the form of GODA STHUTHI when Swamy Desikan was observing mounam (silence) befitting the occasion of the PradhOsham evening. Comment on 2: Swami Desika did not go into a trance. He did not “see” the Archa moorthi but he heard an ethereal voice (asareeri) from the Sanctum.==================================================================================We give below Qn. # 29.
