Guest guest
continuation from part 2 Nathamuni was rejoiced to hear this. He fell at the feet of paraankusa daasar and implored him to teach the (mantra-like) kanninun-siruttambu. Daasar finding naathamunu a fit soul for the communication, taught him this Decad; and Nathamuni with due preparation and in all austerity, sat down in meditation for the term required, and duly invoked nammalwar by the twelve thousand times repeated mantra, as enjoined. Entitled as he was to an extraordinary revelation, by the qualifications he possessed of a true disciple, viz.: ‘faith, virtue, devotion to God, serenity, wisdom and courage” SrI, the universal Lady of mercy, commanded St.Nammalwar to appear to naathamuni. As if a voice came from heaven, the holy image of the saint opened its mouth and asked naathamuni the object of his invocation. Naathamuni submitted to him his prayer: to recover the lost knowledge if the prabandha. Thereon the saint was pleased to dictate to him- i.e., present to his spiritually opened sight, like the sight Lord Krishna gave to Arjuna- the holy tiruvayimozhi of 1000 verses, as well as the 3000 verses of hymns sung by the other saints who appeared before and after St. nammalwar; and in addition taught him the holy doctrine of the three rahasyas[Vide P. xxi-xxii of intro: to lives of aalwars] as well as the secrets of yoga(or the physio-psychological way of approaching God). Naathamuni felt himself blessed; and remained in tirunagari absorbed in the services of alwaar and aadinaatha, But Lord mannaar again appeared to him in a dream, which was to the effect that what naathamuni learnt should be rehearsed before him. He communicated the dream to Lord Aadinatha and alwar, whereupon he was permitted to return to his native place and was further enjoined to spread instruction he had received, among such srivaishnavas as were fitted by their spirirual character, viz, virtues such as sama and dama(or conquest of the senses and the mind). Naathamuni bent his steps homewards and on the way visited many holyshrines and leanrt much of the traditional lore connected with them, and finally reached viranarayanapuram, Here her went to Lord mannaar and as commanded in the dream duly recited all the prabhandas, he had now received, before Him. The Lord after thus giving audience to naatha thought to Himself thus—“That the souls may have life, we provided them with bodies and sense; we gave them shastras and guide them in the right direction; we ourselves ofter took upon as incarnations; and yet our work(of wholesale salvation) remains incomplete. The prabhandas of the alwars are a valuable means by which to effect this regeneration. They therefore ought never again to be allowed to fall out of use. So thinking, He commanded naathamuni to set them to music and in this manner disseminate holy knowledge. In obedience to this command, naathamuni set holy prabhandas to music- celestial music, it is writeen with the help of his nephews kiizhai. Akatt-aazhvaan and mekai-akatt-aalwan; and the prabhandas being now like the Vedas, associated with the three fold intonation of Udutta, anudutta and svarita, spread from that time onwards far and wide in the land. King chola is said to have ruled in those days in a place called gangai konda chola puram, when two courteseans came to him. One could sing according to the mode called deva-gaana(celestial mode); the other according to the mode called manushya gaana(human mode). Each thought she excelled the other; and the subject of their approaching the king was to have the dispute settled between them as to who actually was better. The king ordered a council to meet, before which the singers were made to perform their parts. The dispute was decided in favour of the manushya gaana; amd rich presents were bestowed on that performer, while the other was considered to have failed. ----- will be continued() ________ India Answers: Share what you know.
