Thiruvarangatthu AmudhanAr (contd..)

ThiruvarangathamudhanAr is well known for his devotion to EmperumAnAr and his work irAmAnusa NuTrandhAdhi. However, in few places in VyAkyAnam-s his words are referred to. It will not be out of place to go into few of these quotes.

It is pertinent to note that in most of these quotes he is referred to as 'piLLai amudhanAr'.

SvAmi Periya vAchAn pILLai vyAkyanam

yEADu nilam: ThiruppallANDu-4 - AzvAr calls on the devotees to come into SrevasihNavA fold before they fall into YEADu nilam.

What is YEADu nilam?-smasAna bhUmi. that is the place where is body is reduced to ashes. The AtmA-s everlasting death.

KaLvan koL - Periya Thirumozhi-3-7-1- Here, parakAla nAyaki is stealthily taken away by EmperumAn. This is likened to the sheath being left but the sword taken away.

When parakAla nAyaki's mother was keeping her embraced, she was taken away stealthily.

vaN thuvarai nATTAnai nADi: 6-8-7

When Indra had problem, Sri krishnA restored his place by defeating narakAsuran. Once, at the behest of SatyabhAma, Sri KrshnA went to indra lOKam and took the kaRpagam to Sri DvArakai. Forgetting that, It is the Lord who had restored his status and wealth, IndrAni refuted to part with the pArijatham advising that the tree is meant for DeVAs and not for humans. Sri krshNA took the tree but Indhran forgetting the Lord and His Grace, went behind Him to start a battle with vajrAyudham.

Sri AmudhanAr chides this with the words 'thAn swappanak kudi yEAruvadhaRku munnEa, thannai kuDi iruthinavan, puzhaikkadaiyilEa kuppai mEaniai pidunginAn enRu vajrathaik koNdu thudaruvadhEa! ' enRu piLLai amudhanAr paNikkum padi.

That is, before settling in the dreamland, IndhRa went against Sri krshnA forgetting the Lord's rescue act, just because He had removed one plant from the backyard.

Sri NampiLLai vyAkyanam

EDu-ThiruvAimozhi - ninaindha ellAp porutgatkum vithAi: 1-5-2: AmudhanAr interpreted the word ninaindha as all those with are with the Lord -ninaidhal-kalathal.

This is in consonance with the sruthi vAkya.

Thiruvirutham pAsuram 72 EDu: sUzhginRa kangul surunGA iurLin karum thiNimbai pOzhginRa kangul am-piLLaiyum pOzhga..'

When nAyaki was already suffering from pangs of separation the darkness engulfed which tormented her. She had to look for some rescue to escape from this emotional torture. The emerging moon came as a rescue but alAs! it itself again commenced the torture, reminding constantly of the separation.

Sri AmudhanAr used to narrate a story in this context.'A poor brahmin was going and a cow chased him and he climbed up on a tree and was thinking-who would come to the rescue. A tiger came and slew the cow and remvoed the obstacle of cow but did not go but stood near the tree. This is the state of AzvAr now'

It is pertinent to note that the above quote is given by svAmi NampiLLai in Thiruvirutham EDu.

AchArya Hrdhayam

MaNavALa mAmunikaL in his commentary has also quoted iramAnusa NuTrandhAdhi: AchArya Hrdhayam 204

'ThAikkum-maganukkum....ivar-adi paNindhavarkkum'

The words in the text 'Adi paNindhavar' is referred to as from the pAsuram 1 of iramAnusa nUtrandhAdhi

' mARAn adi paNindhu vuindhavan'

Let us conclude this small piece with the words

'RAmAnusan adi paNindhu vuindhvan'

vara vara muni dasargaL
