The name and clan

Amudhanar was born on a panguni hastham day, in a clan called 'moonkil kudi'. For the very reason that he was in Srirangam periya koil he was famously called 'periya koil nambi'. [some people say that amudhanar was the father/grandfather of " pillaiperumal ayyangar " one who gave the masterpiece ashtaprabhandam and a shisya of parasara bhattar.]

 

Expertise

 

Amudhanar was an expert in all sastras and a great scholar. He was performing his ancestral service of pourOhithyam, puranapatana kainkaryam in the temple filled with ego and pride. At that time, swamy emperumAnar, incarnation of adisesha, due to his ultimate grace wanted to correct the misdeeds of amudhanar and handed over that responsibility to koorathAzhvan, a very great srivaishnava and disciple of emperumanar. Azhvan thereby appropriately corrected amudhanar and put him into the divine feet of emperumanar. EmperumAnAr placed his divine glance on him and instructed him to always be under azhvan. Thereby amudhanar also learnt all the tattva, hita, purushArthas from azhvan devoid of any confusion or misconceptions.

 

The prapanna Gayathri

 

Meanwhile, amudhanar in order to make his acharya happy did a few works highlighting the greatness of emperumAnAr and placed it in front of swamy ramanuja. EmperumAnAr glanced through them and not satisfied with the works he tore them apart and adviced amudhanar as follows: " If you have the desire to write about me, write about our involvement towards azhvars and divya desams " . Amudhanar obliged and with great happiness to have got the approval to write from emperumanar did the divine work, " Iramanusa nootrandAdhi " with 108 verses celebrated as " prapanna gayathri " . He then came to the mutt of emperumAnAr and in front of koorathAzhvan and other great disciples, with the permission of emperumanar, recited the verses. Swamy emperumAnAr himself listened to the divine work and gave his acceptance to teach the same to all interested disciples to cherish their acharya's greatness along with the praise of the azhvars and divya desas daily (nithyAnusandhEyam). At the same time, emperumanar gave an honorary title " Amudhanar " to periya koil nambi as his works were very sweet. From that day the name " periya koil nambi " vanished and he became renowned as " thiruvarangaththamudhanar " and the divine work became famous as " prapanna gayathri "

 

This episode is also told in a slightly different way as follows:

 

The Unique 'Three pAsuram' SathumuRai

Amudhanar as per the orders of emperumanar, started writing the verses seating himself in a mandapam near the adayavalanjan thirumadil when due to the divine orders of Azhagiya maNavalan, emperumAnAr along with Azhvan, Andan, embar and others came to that place.

 

At that time amudhanar has just completed the 105th verse " sezhundirai pArkadal " and was about to start " eruppidam vaikundam " and from that the next 3 paasurams were submitted in front of emperumAnAr. Azhvan hence adviced that in memory of this incident the last 3 paasurams should become sAttrumarai paasurams, on contrast to 2 paasurams considered as sAttru paasurams generally in all other prabhandams.

 

In one of the sapthAvaranath thirunAL, NamperumAL ordained that irAmAnusa nUtRandhAdhi be chanted without any distractions in the thiruvEdhi without any vadhyam-s/instruments. Still this day, this practice is being followed.

 

Highlights of IrAmAnusa NootrandhAdhi

 

1. 100 venpas or 100 kalituRai verses in andhAdhi style is called as nootrandhAdhi. Venpa/kalituRai/andhAdhi-Tamil language poetic styles. Though this divine work as 8 extra paasurams more than 100 still it is customary to call it as " nootrandhAdhi "

2. The reason for choosing the number of verses to be 108 and addition of 'Ramanusa' thirunamam in each verse is to make it like a gayathri manthram for prapannas to be chanted daily. Hence this prabhandam is adorned as " prapanna savithri/gayathri " .

3. Though this work was done during the time of emperumanar and also listened by emperumanar himself, as per the orders of namperumal this divine work was added to the 4000 divya prabhandam (azhvar's arulicheyal)

4. The anadhyayanam after thirukArthigai is applicable to this divine work also.

5. Among the 4000, mudalamAyiram (first thousand), Periya thirumozhi, thiruvaimozhi and eyarpa this nootrandhAdhi is added to the end of Eyarpa. Like adding 'kanninun siruthambhu' talking about bhagavata seshatvam to the mudalayiram (elaborating the pranavArtham) it is apt to add this work to eyarpa (elaborating about removing the obstacles that hinder kainkaryam).

6. One great similarity in both kanninun siruthambhu and iramanusa nootrandhAdhi is that both talk about the charamaparva nistai (acharya prapaththi) and only in these two the authors rejoice themselves attaining the result. The azhvars cry and lament in order to get the ultimate result from perumal but madurakavigal and amudhanar sing in joy that after attaining the divine feet of their acharyas there is nothing more to be attained and that they are assured of everything.

7. IrAmAnusa nUtRandhAdhi - a great work -andhAdhi -consistently and devotedly worhsipping Sri RamAnuja divine feet pAsuram to pAsuram. Starting with Sri Nam AzvAr, amudhanAr highly praises the devotees of EmperumAnAr.

He prides himself to be the disciple of KurAthAzvan and is very happy to be devoted to Sri RamAnujA, who is devoted to AzvAr-AchArya.

Preferring even NamperumAL to RamAnuja, finally settles down to iramAnusa mind rather than to all the divya desam-s.

 

The great words of ThiruvarangathamudhanAr is quoted by commentators in their commentaries. This can be observed in ThiruppallANDu vyAkyAnam., Thiruvirutham, Periya Thirumozhi and NampiLLai EDu.

 

Let us dwell into these aspects further.
