Vadakku theruvIthippiLLAi

Thirunakshathram: ani swathi

srI krshNa pAda pAdAbjE namAmi SirasA sadA

yath pradAdapraBhAvEna sarva sidDhiraBhUn mama

 

Swami vadakkutheruveethi pillai was the grand disciple of swami nampillai and illustrious father of swami piLLAi lokacharyar and swami azhagiya maNavALapperumAL nAyanAr. Even after his marriage he was holding up vairagyam and did not wanted to go into the regular life with his wife. So vadakkutheruvithi pillai's mother went to swami nampillai and requested that, only for the purpsoe of our sampradhAyam he should beget issues. Nampillai understood this immediately and asked to bring vadakkutheruvithipillai's wife to his kalakshepa goshti and when she arrived, he blessed that she will be blessed with a wonderful child. .

 

Hence was born swami piLLAi lOkAcharyar in CE 1205. One year after this, namperumal through archakas commanded to him that, you got a son by the wish of nampillai and now you get another child by my wish. Hence the brother to swamipiLLAi lokacharyar was born and he was named as azhagiya maNavALapperumAL nAyanAr (CE 1207).

 

vadakkutheruvIthippiLLAi meticolosuly reduced into writing in manuscripts (pattOlai) the entire nampiLLAi's upanyasas (lectures) into palmleaf manuscripts and it came around 36000 ppadi. svAmi NampiLLai happened to see this, but since it was an exact replica of his lectures and was neither too short nor too large he did not destroy it like he did for naduviltheruvIthi piLLAi bhattar's case. Instead he kept it for himself for a while and finally handed it over to EyuNNI mAdhavar (or SiriyAzhvAn appiLLai) and asked him to keep it until a proper adhikari will come and opens it up to the world. Thus the magnum opus EDu was recorded for posterity, which we enjoy and cherish even now.

 

Swami mamunikal says in upadESArathinamalai

seerAr vaDakkutheruvIthippiLLAi ezhuthErAr

thamizhvEdatthIDuthanai thArum ena vAngi munnampiLLAi

IyuNNi mAdhavarkku tham kodutthAr pinnathanaitthAn

(nampiLLai took the Edu from vadakkutheruvIthippiLLai and handed it over to EyuNNimadhava)

Swami mamunikal glorifies vaDukkutheruVIthipiLLAi as vaLLAl vaDakkutheruvIthippiLLAi or as a person of unbounded liberality, without which we might not have had the wonderful 36000ppaDi commentary.

Swami periya-v-AcchAn piLLai had innumerable sishyas and kainkaryaparas during his time, and Vadikesari azhagiyamaNavaLa jeeyar in his poorvasrama was with periya-v-AcchAn piLLai doing manual helps to him and his sishyas. He was illiterate and every one knew this . one day after taking bath in kaveri river, he was about to go to his everyday duties at periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi's house, he found some disciples of periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi sitting and doing some great discussions. By the causeless mercy of emperuman, he stayed back and enquired them what they were discussing. People thought any way he has no idea about scriptures lets make fun of him and they replied " Musala kisalayam " – mace sprout

Our hero thought it is a very big grantha and came back satisfied. While doing this he was already late for his daily duties, which periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi noticed and asked why you are late today. Then he explained he stepped in to the discussion forum and had a look there. periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi very well knew that he was ignorant and illiterate and asked him what they were discussing. He replied, they were discussing " musala kisalaya " . periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi laughed and told, they were making fun of you intentionally my child, since you did not learn properly you did not understand how they made you a fool and explained the meaning. That moment enormous grief was born in his heart and he fell to periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi's lotus feet. I am ignorant and illiterate, kindly help me. As befittingly all our poorvacharyas call swami periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi as " parama kAruNika " the absolute merciful- right from that day swami started instructing him from alphabets to the extent that

anpOdu azhagiya maNavALa jeeyar pinpOrum kattharinthu

pEsukaikkA thamperiya pOdhamuDan mAran maRai

poruLuraitthathu Ethamil pannIrAyiram

with utmost love, Azhagiya maNavALa jeeyar wrote down the 12000ppaDi commentary for thiruvaymozhi, for the future generation to learn, understand and to spread it by words. His kindness in the 12000ppaDi commentary is such a way that, till date this commentary is the very good in the sense of explaining Pada-padArtha and anwvaya : word by word meaning and Prose order. Such an immaculate kainkaryam would not have been possible with out the utmost mercy of the paramakAruNika swami periya-v-AcchAn piLLAi.

 

Swami took asrama sweekaram in the name of Azhagiya maNavAla Jeeyar, and one can imagine from his title itself, Vadi kEsari – Among the speakers he was the lion. He wrote many pioneering granthas in the VishishtAdwaitha philosophy, like Deepa prakasa, Vadi kEsari Rahasya thraya kArika, Pramana sangraha etc. He wrote in Tamil a wonderful Venpa for bhagavad githa. Writing Venpa is one of the most difficult tasks in tamil. For the people who made him fun with musalakisalayam, he wrote a grantha with the name musalakisalayam, bedecked with the philosophical out pouring.
