Guest guest
SrI: Dear Sri VaishNavaas: praNams: On 21st Nov, 07 is Kaisika Ekadasi which is celebrated in all dhivyadesams, but this is special in Thiru-k-kurungudi dhivyadesam. Out of 25 Ekadasis' per year, 2 Ekadasi on sukla paksham is considered to be important. One is on Karthigai sukla paksha Ekadasi - Kaisika Ekadasi and the other on Margazhi sukla paksha Ekadasi - Vaikunta Ekadasi. During Kaisika Ekadasi, Kaisika PuraaNam is read(patanam - vaasithal) in all dhivyadesams. This maahaatmiyam is told by Sri Varaha Perumal to Bhoomi devi thaayar and is explained in " Varaha Puranam " . This maahatmiyam narrates a devotee named Nampaaduvan who lived in Thiru-k-kurungudi dhivyadesam. Hence this Ekadasi has great relationship with this dhivyadesam. The legend goes as follows: NambAduvAn was a devotee of Thiru-k-kurungudi emperumAn. During every ekAdasi, he used to go up to temple and hymns(recite) some pasuram, performs mangalAsasanam to emperuman and will return to his house happily. One day when he was on the way to temple, caught up by a brahmarakshasu (an evil soul) and it told him that, it would consume him. NambAduvAn requested brahmarakshas that he would come back after reciting some pasurams ( NambAduvAn sings using Kaisika Pann), then it can took him as food. But brahmarakshasu was not in a position to leave NambAduvAn, because it felts that he may escape. Hence NambAduvAn started promising to brahmarakshasu that, if he doesnt turned back after completing mangalAsAsanam to emperuman he may became that, or he may get the papam like that, etc.., etc.,, On hearing all those, still brahmarakshasu was not in a position to leave nambAduvAn to perform mangalAsAsanam to emperumAn. Now, NambAduvAn promised that, " IF ANYONE SAYS THAT, LORD SRIMAN NARAYANAN IS EQUIVALENT TO, or ON PAR WITH, or INFERIOR TO SOMEONE ELSE, then WHAT THE PAAPAM and NARAKAM( hell) that HE WILL GET, I WILL ALSO GET THE SAME, if i dont returned back to you " Once on hearing this, the brahmarakshasu IMMEDIATELY released the hands of NambAduvAN and said that, " IN THIS LOKAM, THERE IS NO SIN GREATER THAN THIS! " After the mangaLAsasanam to Perumal, Nampaaduvaan returned to brahmarakshas, but brahmarakshas refused to ate Nampaaduvan. Instead it asked the phalan of sruti which was rendered by Nampaaduvan to emperuman, so that, it can rid out from being as brahmarakshas. But Nampaaduvan replied that, he didn't sung any paasuram for any phalan. Then brahmarakshas, asked for the last paasuram (in Kaisika paN) as a phalan from Nampaaduvan. But Nampaaduvan refused that, he doesn't sung any paasuram for any phalan. Atlast the brahmarakshas bargained for giving phalan of any one paasuram. Finally, Nampaaduvan gave the phalan of one paasuram and hence the brahmarakshas retained it's original state. Kaisika Puranam, which still takes place in thiru-k-kurungudi divya desam every year during Kaisika ekadasi festival. Today (21,Nov 07) night, this would be enacted as a drama by group of persons in this dhivyadesam. If anyone attend this, please send the pics if any. Guest guest
AdiyEn Raamanuja dhaasan In Varaaha puraanam, where (Bhoomi)Piraattiyaar asks (Yem)Perumaan the way to get rid of the '' Samsaara cycle, PerumaaL says thannaip paadi ugappiththaal samsaarak kadalin karai yEralaam. (the best way to beat this samsaara cycle is to please Him by singing His glory) He also tells her the story of ''nampaaduvaan". (in the 48th chapter of Sri Varaha Puranam,) In that, after the Brahmaraakshasa is unconvinced of the first thirteen promises made by ''nampaaduvaan", Nampaaduvaan says in his 14th promise, NaaraayaNamathaanyaisthu dhEvaisthulyam karOthi ya : thasya paapEna lipyEyam yadh yaham naagame puna: Meaning Nampaaduvaan says he will get the same sin of (becoming) a nithya samsaari (like) who(ever that) compares Sriman Naarayanaa, who is sarvaantharyaami, MOkshappradhan and who is without an equivalent or a superior (Oppaarum mikkarum illaadhavan) with idhara dhevathaas, " Kaanilum uruppolaar sevikkinaadha keerthiyaar* pEnilum varanthara midukkilaadha thevar" (thiruchchandha viruththam) on hearing which the Brahmaraakshasa gets convinced of the Nampaaduvaan's honesty to return and leaves him (to sing the kaisika Pann to thiruk kurungudi nambi (after completing the '' Jagara vratham of not sleeping on yEkadhasi night)on the early morning of Dhvadhasi day of Vruschika maasa sukla paksha.) Nampaaduvaan not only completes his vratha but also comes back as promised and saves the Brahmaraakshasa by donating the Palan of singing a song in Kaisikap paN.( the Brahma raakshas was a Brahmin in his early birth and who became a Brahmaraakshas because of his committing mistakes during a Yagnya) from his curse.... Thus Sri Varaahappiraan states that the best way to attain mOksha is the Gaana roopam (to sing His glory) Nammaazhwar says '' Aadiyaadi agam karaindhu* isai paadipaadi kanneer malgi ......'' and thats what is exemplified/ empasised by Piraatti herself in vEdhamanaithukkum vitthu, Thiruppaavai. Guest guest
SrI: Dear Sriman Padmanabhan : PaNN is the precursor to the Raagaa system of Karnatic Music . It evolved from a Pentatonic scale and the folk songs of the 5 Kinds of Land classfied in Sangam Literature : Kurunji ( Hills ) , Marutham ( arable land) , Mullai ( Pastoral) , Neythal ( coastal land ) and Paalai ( water land) . PaNN from its pentatonic scale evolved over time into Seven note ( heptatonic) Carnatic music rich in mictrotones as well . PaaNars played PaNNs with their Yaazh to the accompnimnet of unique TaaLams ; The seven notes of of " Tamil Music " at the time of Sangam literature are :Kural , Tuttham , KaikkiLai , Uzhai , iLi , ViLari and Taram . There are night PaNNs and Day PaNNs just as in Carnatic Music ( BhUpALam , Revagupthi for early Morning , DhanyAs and SaavEri before Mid Morning etc ). PaNN Peyartthal ( slight shift in svarAs of a Raaga to create new RaagAs or to shift and return from one Raaga to the other ( Svara bhEdham) are common to both Tamil and Carnatic Music . ThiruppANAzhwaar among AzhwArs was a great exponent of Yaazzh Music . Swamy Naathamuni set the dhivya Prabhandham to Music and TaaLam for singing at temples . During the Uthsavams, ( Bali SamarpaNam , Nava Sandhi Nruthyam as UpachAram ) , specific TaaLams like Megha Nandanam were used . Panchamukha Vaadhyam was sounded in Saivite Temples . The TevAram tradition maintained by OthuvArs is a rich tradition maintained even today thanks to the Aadheenams like Dharmapuram near Maayavaram ( MayilAdithuRai) . A few more observations on the links between OaNNs and CarnAtic Music RaagAs : Mullai PaNN is Raagam Mohanam ; Padhumalai Paalai is the Mela Raagam of Nada Bhairavi ; IndhaLam is Naadha Naamakriya; Kurunji is Malahari ; TakkEdu is KaambhOji ; Kousikam is Bhairavi ; Natta Paadai is Gambheera Naattai ; ArumpAlai or Pazham Panjaram is Dheera SankarAbharaNam ; Panchamam is the Raagam Ahiri known for its pathos ; mERcchempAlai is the 65th Mela Raagam of ( Mesa) KalyANi . Thirujn~Ana Sambhandhar and Thirumangai AzhwAr were contemproaries and hail from KaazhiccheerAma ViNNagaram ( SeerkAzhi ) . There are thus a lot of links between the Tamil ( PaNN based ) Music and today's Carnatic Music put to use in worship of the Dhivya Dampathis directly or indirectly .
