Sri Ramayanam State level contest in BalaKandam and Ayodhya Kandam (separately) has been conducted for the past 2 years. This year about 4, 500 students enrolled for this contest throughout TamilNadu and participated in a written exam held on 29th of June, 2008. The selected students were recruited for a viva voce on 31st August 2008, after issuance of necessary materials like book, CDs and also arranging for personal santhai coaching classes at selected centres. Exam centres at Madurai, Srirangam and Chennai were very busy in conducting the exam as the winners were to be selected from hundreds of contestants at each centre.

Though the contest was scheduled at 10 a.m., students started to pour into the exam halls from 8 a.m. onwards, many with their parents. Srimaan Trust had made necessary arrangements to lodge them. Dedicated, erudite and plenipotentiary vidwans and scholars had been requested to act as judges to select the successful contestants. Students were seated collectively in divisions Khandam-wise and group-wise. The arrangement was made this year to avoid any timidity or nervousness in the students. It seemed to be fruitful when witnessed during the exam.

It was flabbergasting to see some of the students especially the kids narrate the slokas with readiness (SEE THE VIDEO LINK BELOW) and without lingering. For some time, the whole place was reverberating with recitations of slokas of samskhepa Ramayanam and Passurapadi Ramayanam (of Sri Periyavachanpillai) and the minds of the parents and others were sanctified by the reverberating hymns. The judges with their profound knowledge and sagacity took much pain to examine and evaluate the performance of the students accounting various points for the accuracy, continuity, memory power, pronunciation, etc to bring out candor results. The students were also given a chance to have their own choice of slokas to recite.

In Madurai, Sri K.R. Muralidaran, Sri Rajan (both Sanskrit pandits), in Srirangam Sri U.Ve.Tirupulani Dr. Narasimhan swamy, Smt. Dr. Usha, Sri U.Ve S.T. Ranganrajan swamy, Sri U.Ve.Jagannathan swamy and in Chennai Sri U.Ve. Aravindalochanan swamy, Sri U.ve. P.B. Sampath kumar swamy, Smt. Vasumathi, Smt. Sridevi Sampath, Smt. Sumitra Varadarajan, and Smt. Prema were the revered judges who helped eagerly and willingly.

Most of the parents gave ideal suggestions to intensify the vigor of the students and parents in uderstanding Sri Ramayana. A number of parents expressed their blessings to the Trust for its incessant service to the society especially to the younger generation. Many parents testified that the mission of teaching Sri Ramayana through a catechism method is a magnificent idea as their children could not be attracted in any other way to learn the great epics of the world.

The results were published by the evening of the same day. Congratulations to the winners and best wishes to others for improvement. The real success lies only in what one has learnt and that is the gain offered to each contestant.
