Guest guest
The concern of Azhwars on the struggle of the chetanas Namazhwar’s concern: In the Divya Prabandam, Thiruvaimozhi, Chapter 3, Pasuram-4, Sri Namazhwar was very much concerned about the chetanas who due to their Karma always care for the happiness derived from their body, materialistic pleasures. He addresses Sriman Narayanan as follows: “YOU have created other religions which have confused the minds of the poor /chetanas. Instead of doing your duty of creating means to save these people from the clutches of wrong doing, make them realize their mistakes and attract them towards YOU, YOU are enjoying and deeply enthralled in the ecsotic fragrance of the flowers and the herbal scents emanating from thiruthuzhai (Tulasi) that YOU are wearing, forgetting the chetanas waste their precious life in all earthly pleasures. If this continues they will loose YOU completely. Then what will happen to this world which YOU have created?†Even though this pasuram reflects Azhwar’s own feelings, one can also infer that Pirati, who is very much concerned, appeals to Perumal to do away with HIS silence and enjoying the fragrance of flowers and the beauty of HIS ornamental alankarams and help the chetanas in this broad world. The Pasuram: mAtathe yakilum immalar thalai mA gnalam nin mAttaya mAlarpuraiyum thiru vuruvam mAnam vaika mAttatha pala samayam mAthi keduthai mAlar thuzhai mAte nee mAnam vaithai gnalam varundade? Meaning of Words: mAlar thalai mA gnalam: This big broad world originated from the Lotus flower, having its Sacred place on the ‘nabi’ of Sriman Narayanan nin mAttaya: Your wealth of Swaroopm mAlar puraiyum Thiruvuruvam: revealed in Your beautiful flower like Thirumeni mAnam vaika mAtatheyakilum: the chetanas in this world could not engage themselves in their mind such beautiful Swaroopa mAttatha pala samayam mAthi koduthai: (You have) created other religions thereby confusing the minds of human beings of this world without any concern on taking proper action to retrieve this mAlar thuzhai mAtte world from the clutches of evil, You are enjoying the nee mAnam vaithai fragrance of Thiruthuzhai (Tulasi) and other such scents emanated from the flowers (that You are adorning) mA gnalam varundado? (If You keep quite like this) the people of this big world will be engrossed in other worldly pleasures and loose You Completely. Ref: Sri Dr. V.V.Ramanujam Swamy’s Viyakyanam Sri Thondaradipotiazhwar’s concern: On the same line of thinking but in a different mode of expression Sri Thondaradipodiazhwar was also very much concerned and more serious about the sufferings of the chetanas. Divya Prabandam Thirumalai, Pasuram 16, goes as follows: “SoothanAi kalvanAgi thoortharodu esaintha kalam mAtharAr kayal kan ennum valaiyul pattu azhunduvenai ‘podu are’ enru solli pundiyil pugundu thanpal Adaram peruga vaitha Azhagan voor Arangam Andre†Meaning of words: soodum Aai kalvan Aagi: Those who say no to Iswar and no to Dharma and claim the Athma as his own that belongs to Iswar (Here ‘kalvan’ means a person taking away others Belongings like the chetanas claim Athma as his Own which actually belongs to Bhagavan) Thoortharodu esaintha kalam: the period (when I was ) in the company of bad Elements mAdarar kayal kan ennum: falling a prey to the trap laid by women with their beautiful eyes like a fish azhunduvenai : when I was immersed in such unholy pleasure *‘podu Are’ enru solli: (HE) called me “come here†Pundiyil pugundu: and got into my inner mind Thanpal adaram peruga vaitha Azhagan: and dragged me to HIS side and blessed me with His aboundant love – HE is the beautiful Emperuman Voor Arangam Andre: lives in the place called Thiruvarangam To think others belongings as his own is referred as stealing here. Vice and stealing are referred to as the act of negative attitude on the ultimate, the Iswar. The act of chetanas wrongly thinking that Athma belong to them, which is actually in possession of Iswar is compared to stealing here. Those who possess good qualities believe Athma belongs to Iswar and become slaves of Baghavan (Saranagathi) To think what Baghavan desire is Devine and what HE do not desire is evil, is the best salvation. This Pasuram is a passionate outpouring of the Azhwar’s heart on obtaining union with Baghavan. This Pasuram is considered to be a gem of poetry and a beautiful Tamizh literary piece. *Podu Are, Bhagavadas! view this divya dharsanam of Lord Ranganathaswamy.
