Guest guest
Sri Chari,The identification of manjal and kumkum with the sacred has been a part of South Indian culture for centuries. Kumkum is a derivative of manjal, and both are known for their antiseptic properties. Women apply manjal on their bodies for overall health. The same is done for thAyAr in every temple as part of thirumanjanam, and when this is done, this manjal is provided to the devotees as prasadam. It is also applied to the thAyAr on perumAL's chest daily, and all over perumAL during His thirumanjanam. This too is distributed to the devotees. Sometimes it is hardened first when it acquires the shape of His thirumArba or hands. This should be kept in one's kOvil azhvAr and worshipped. I hope this helps.Mohan
