Guest guest
The endearing appellation AzhvAr signifies the devotee submerged in the pool of love for God. The community of the mystics / saints (who are venerated as AzhvAr) is prophesied in the well-known text ("kalau khalu bhavishyanti") in Srimad bhAGavatam as "nArAyaNa-parAyaNA:". Sri Parasara Bhatta strung the sacred names in the classic taniyan-SlOkam, ~ "bhUtam saras-cha etc". He has set SrirAmAnuja's name also ("yateendra-miSrAnn") in this verse on account of the latter's unequalled spiritual eminence. The holy collect, divya-prabandham / aruLi-c-cheyal, includes the hymns of ANDAL as well as of Madhura-kavi. However, the two have a special status and are not therefore included in the AzhvAr tally which is ten ~ ANDAL on account that she is adored verily as divinity ('pirATTi') herself, which is why Bhattar composed an exclusive taniyan to meditate on ANDAL ("neelA-tunGa-stana-giri"). Likewise, Madhura-kavi stands apart, since he hymned namm-AzhvAr alone ("dEvu maRRaRiyEnn"), and not Our Lord direct. Sri Vedantacharya abides by this count (in his rahasya-traya-sAram) and refers to the AzhvAr-s as Our Lord's neo-incarnated decad ("abhinava daSAvatAram").AzhvAr became a cherished honorofic of the sampradAyam as it grew. The names chakrat-AzhvAr, GaruDAzhvAr, iLaiyAzhvAr are familiar. The honorofic attached to some of the evolved savants (jnAni) too in uDaiyavar's convocation (simhAsanAdhipati-s), but the terminal 'r' was changed to 'nn' to accord with the mortal world. Like naDADUr AzhvAnn, GO-maThat--tAzhvAnn, as (probably) taken after Sri kUrattAzhvAnn who received this affectionate from Sri Ramanuja himself.aDiyEn rAmAnuja-dAsan,tirumanjanam Sundara Rajan(Srirangam). --- On Wed, 4/7/10, Peesapati V V S Chari <charipvvs wrote: Peesapati V V S Chari <charipvvs[sri ramanuja] Alwars only twelve ..
