Nambi-Pimbi

In local parlance people name their wards after famous people/figures. of the

contemporary period. Here nambi refers to a popular figure or a wealthy person.

Pimbi refers to the straight opposite one.

If it is a famous or wealthy one, it will fade after some time as it is due to

ka:rmic effect. That is why a:zhva:r says 'na:lu na:lil azhungip po:me'. So

whether it is wealthy one or otherwise, it makes no difference.

The the first nambi is in the context of mortals. a:zhva:r recommends to name

their children with respect to God's name and this is their wealth and

thereafter they possess the real wealth and so a:zhva:r addresses them as

'nambika:l' - owners of real wealth.

The text of ma:munikal vya:kya:nam goes as follows:

adha:vadhu thirunamam sonnavarkku sahala sampathum vunda:mpadi

Those who chant His Divine name possess all the wealth and they become

'nambika:l'. From the annals of Visathva:k sika:mani Sri Manava:la ma:muni.

Sri Periya:zva:r Thriuvadigale: saranam

Hope this is clear.

NambiBimbi?

In Periyazhwar Thirumozhi, Aaraam Thirumozhi, KasunGgaraiyudai, in

which Periyazhwar advices people to name their kids with Parama

Purusha's na:mams, the 8th Paasuram is:

nambibimbi endru naattu maanidap peritta:l

nambumpimbumella:m na:lu na:lil azhungip po:m

semperuntha:maraik kannan pe:rittazhaiththakka:l

nambika:l! na:ranan tham annai naragam puga:l

Please enlighten as to what Periyazhwar means by the first word

'Nambibimbi'.

(It is interesting that in the last line he addresses us as

'Nambika:l!', with the combination of the first word of the paasuram

where he seems to say something else.)
