On reaching those woods the great seer Viswamithra tells

Rama thus:

"Heh Rama! This forest is very dangerous. Earlier there used

to be two kingdoms - Maladam and Karusam here. They were built by the

celestials. Indra incurred the sin of Brahma hathya after killing Vruthrasura.

As a result of this, excess hunger and excretion caught hold of him. Then the

devathas and the rishies made him bathe in the waters that were sanctified and

empowered by the manthras with the power of their penance. With that bath Indra

got relieved of his hunger (Karusam) and excretion (Malam). Thus Indra was

purified. The Karusam and Malam which left him were borne by that kingdom. He

felt happy and grateful and blessed the kingdoms Karusam and Malam to flourish

well and become famous. The devathas commended him for blessing those kingdoms.

For long they prospered well. After some

time a yaksha lady who had the power of kaamarupa (ability to change into any

form) came there. She possessed a thousand elephants' strength. Her name was

Tha:taka". On uttering her name Viswamithra was afraid and blessed Rama, 'Let

you be graced with all glories!'

"She is Sunda's wife. Her son Maaricha is equal to Indra in

strength. He is a demon, very courageous with a vast mouth and form. He has a

frightening body and he terrifies all. That Tataka must be blocking our way at

a distance of one and half yojanas from here. Now we need to go there. You have

to kill that wicked vicious demon with your might. Because of her no one is

able to enter this kingdom. Rama! I have told you all the details about these

woods", concluded Viswamithra.
