Sundarakandam- word by word translation

 

Chapter1

    

 

5. neelalohithama:njishta pathravargaih sitha:sithaih|

   svabha:vavihithaih chithraih dha:thubhih samalamkrutham||

 

6. ka:mru:pibhih a:vishtam abhi:kshnam saparicchadaih|

    yakshakinnaragandharvaih devakalpaih cha pannagaih||

 

7. sa thasya girivaryasya thale: na:gavara:yuthe:|

   thishtan kapivarah thathra hrade:  na:ga iva a:babhou||

 

Hanuman , the best among the monkeys, shone on the region of the best of

mountains, Mahendra parvata, which was decorated by  mineral rocks  of  natural

varied colours of blue, red green, white and black, surrounded by best of

elephants and yakshas, kinnaras and gandharvas who could assume any form they

like, with excess of  ornaments and clothes and divine serpents, like an

elephant in a lake.

 

kapivarah- Hanuman, kapeenam varah- the best among monkeys.

 

a:babhou- shone

 

hrade: na:ga ive- like an elephant, naaga,  in a lake, hrada.

 

thasya girivarasya thale:- on the region of the Mahendra parvatha, which is the

best among mountains, girivara.

 

Na:gavara:yuthe- where best of elephants are found.

 

thathra – in that mountain

 

1. samalamkrutham- well decorated by

 

dha:thubhih- mineral rocks,

 

svabha:va vihithaih- naturally endowed with

 

chithraih –various

 

neelalohithma:njishtapathravarnaih- colours, varnaih, of blue,neela, red,

lohitha, green  (pathravarNa-leafy colour)  and,

 

sitha asithaih - white and black, sitha = white, asitha = not white, that is,

black

 

2. a:vishtam- surrounded or frequented

 

yaksha, kinnara gandharvaih- by celestial beings of the  species mentioned

 

ka:maru:pibhih- who could assume desired form, ka:marupa

 

abheekshnaih saparicchadaih- adorned with excessive ornaments and clothes, ie

richly attired. The word abhi:kshna means excess or abundance here. apricchada

meaning ornaments and clothes can also be taken as attendants or dependents,

meaing that these celestials were seen there with their families or attendants..

 

3. devkalpaih pannagaih- with serpents of divine origin. The word pannaga is

also translated as a different species of celestials.

 

 

8. sa su:rya:ya mahendhra:ya pavana:ya svayambhuve|

   bhu:thesbhyascha  anjalim kruthva: chaka:ra gamane: mathim||

 

9.anjalim praangmukhah kurvan pavana:ya a:thmayonaye|

   thatho hi vavrudhe ganthum dakshino: dakshina:m disam|| 

 

Hanuman offered salutations to Soorya, Indra, Vayu nd Brahma and also to the

elements and contemplated on going.

Hanuman the skilled, offered obeisance to his father Vayu, and then started

growing to proceed towards the southern direction

 

sah –Hanuman

anjalim kruthva- offering salutations   

su:ryaaya- to the Sun-god,

mahendhra:ya- to Indhra

pavanaaya- to Vayu the wind-god,

svayanmbhuve- to Brahma, the self-born

bhoothebhyascha – to the elements

chaka:ra mathim-  contemplated on

gamane – going.

anjalim kruthva – bowing down

prangmukhah- eastward

pavana:ya- to Vayu

a:thmayo:nayae- who was his father. Yoni means source  of origination here.

A:thma yoni means source of origination of one self. That is vayu with reference

to Hanuman

thathah – then

dakshinah – the one with skill, Hanuman

vavrude- started growing

ganthum – to got to

dhakshiNaam dhisam- in the southern direction

 

Hanuman first bowed to his father towards eastern direction and then all the

other devas and started growing his body in order to go towards south, where

Lanka was situated. Here there is a pun on the  word dhakshina, which means

south as well as one who is skilled.

 

10.plavanga pravaraih drushtah plavane: krithanischayah|

   vavrudhe  ra:mavrudhyartham samudra iva parvasu||

 

While the eminent monkeys were looking at Hanuman,  deciding to jump on the sky,

grew like the sea during the tides for the sake of the welfare of Rama.

drushtah- was looked at

 

plavangapravaraih- by the eminent monkeys like Jambavan, Angada and others

krthanischayah- having made up his mind

plavathe – for jumping (on the sky)- plavathe is dative singular of plavan,

jumping

 

vavrudhe – grew in size- perfect tense of vrudh to grow – vardhathi is the

present tense form.

 

ra:mavruddhyartham-  for the welfare of Rama.- Here the word vruddhi denoting

growth or prosperity is used in the sense of welfare. It means that Hanuman

decided to fly in the sky to cross the ocean to accomplish what was good to

Rama, namely to find Seetha.

 

samudhra iva- like the sea

 

parvasu- during the tides (when the sea swells and occupies the shore) The word

parva has meaning of full tides besides, a joint, section,  season etc.

 

11.nishpranma:na sari:rassan lilanghayishuh arnavam|

    ba:hubhya:m pi:daya:ma:sa charana:bhya:m cha parvatham||

 

Hanuman with his immeasurable body, wishing to cross the sea pressed the

mountain with his arms and feet.

 

nishpramana sareerah san- having an immeasurably large body. pramana means

measure, nishprama:na is something which is not measurable,

 

lilanghayishuh  arnavam- wishing to cross the sea. langhayithum icchuh

=lilanghayishuh- arnava means the sea.- arna:msi= jala:ni, waters , santhi athra

ithi arnavah

 

baahubhyaam charana:bhyaam cha – with his arms  and feet.

 

parvatham pi:daya:ma:sa- pressed the mountain. The word pi:da means oppression

and here the mountain was oppressed by the pressure of his arms and feet due to

his huge size.

 

12.sa chacha:la achalah cha api muhu:rtham kapipi:dithah|

    tharu:na:m pushpitha:gra:na:m sarvam pushpam asa:thayath||

 

The mountain shook being oppressed by hanuman and showered all the flowers of

the trees which were having flowers at their tips.

 

Sa achalah api-  even  that mountain  The mountain is called achala since it is

immovable.

 

chacha:la-  moved.(inspite of being achala)

 

muhu:ortham – for a moment

 

kapipi:dithah- being pressed by Hanuman

 

asa:thayath-showered. sa:thanam means causing to fall though it is usually used

in a destructive sense.

 

sarvam pushpam- all the flowers

 

tharu:ni- of the trees

 

pushpitha:gra:ni- which had their tips.(covered) with blossoms

Can any one recall the essays on Sundara KaaNDam that appeared in KalaimagaL five dcades ago and possibly authored by Sri Vaikunta Vaasi Professor A.SrinivAsa RaghavAcchAr Swamy of PudukkOttai ? Please advise .Thanks .

Respected Sir:

Sometime back I referred to you regarding a Tamil book Valmiki Ramayanam Sundarakandam. I got it from a gentleman. He is very sure that it was by my revd father and was published by Kalaimagal publications some five decades ago. Unfortunately the 2 or three pages containg name of author, publishers, price etc are not found. I could not get any inf. about this from some 10 or 20 persons I contacted. Can you intensify the search and find out whether it was my revd. father's work. ofcourse I have scanned the book and copied in my PC.

Kindly help me
