The guna or quality is that which possesses the generic attribute (saamaanya) of qualitiness guNathva. According to Nyayavoseshika school, the saamaanya, generality exists in dhravya, guna and karma, namely dhravyathva, gunathva and karnmathva. The qualities are classified as 24 only as the others not specified could be included among one of these. For example, lightness is only absence of heaviness, softness and hardness are only variations of density of contact among the parts and hence could be included under samyoga. These qualities will be discussed in detail later.
