How dear this atman(self) is?

How

dear this atman is, the following passage puts it in beautiful language.

It says-

'This self is dearer than a son, dearer than wealth, dearer than everything

else, and is innermost. Should a person (holding the self as dear) say to one

calling anything else dearer than the self,' (What you hold) dear will die' He

or she is certainly competent ( to say so)- it will indeed come true. One

should meditate upon the self alone as dear. Of him or her who meditates upon

the self alone as dear, the dear ones are not mortal.'

But this idea needs a little explanation here. We think wealth is dear to us.

Many things of this world seem dear to us, but actually it is not so. The human

being is greater than his or her possessions. In critical situations we come to

realize this great truth of what is actually dear to us. When we face death,

would we choose wealth and possessions or try to save ourselves? We would

certainly choose only to save ourselves first.

This i saw distinctly during the crisis of the Second World War. I was in

Rangoon from 1939 to 1942. The Japanese had bombed and invaded Rangoon, and the

city-life was total dislocated. Then took place the Burma to India evacuation

when thousands of refugees started leaving Rangoon city for India, carrying all

their valuables with them. They wanted to carry their possessions as much as

they could- radios, bedding, blankets and many other costly things. But how

could one carry all these through such a long distance? After some distance,

one item was left behind on the roadside, then the other, and this way, one by

one all their possessions were left behind, and finally the person alone

reached this country. His self reached this country and not his possessions.

All the valuables were left behind and only the most valuable thing i.e. the

self reached here.

Here Sankaracharya makes a beautiful remark-

A thing which is extremely dear deserves to be attained by the utmost effort.

So is this self (the atman), which is dearer than everything else held dear in

the world. Therefore, one should make the utmost effort to attain it..
