VedAnthAchArya varyO mE sannidhatthAM sadhA hrudhi " !! Swami has explained our Lord as being the upaadana kaarana, nimitta kaarana and sahakaari kaarana. Our Lord is the cause and effect! This has been dealt with by Swami in Achyuta satakam. Here is a brief of the Slokas 12 - 15 of Swami Desika's Achyuta satakam giving us the basic concepts. Our Lord has everything as His body and so becomes the material cause -- upaadana kaarana. Since our Lord's will is the cause of creation He is also the instrumental cause -- nimitta kaarana. Let us take an example of a goldsmith who makes a jewel out of gold. Gold is the cause and jewel is the effect. So, gold is upaadana kaarana of the jewel. To convert gold into a jewel, we need the goldsmith. So, the goldsmith is also a cause in making the jewel, hence is the nimitta kaarana. From the above it is clear that the upaadana kaarana and nimitta kaarana can never be the same! The only exception to this being our dear Lord !!! Brahman is the upaadana and nimitta kaarana in the creation of the world!!! If we consider the world as a jewel, He is both the gold and the goldsmith, for the creation of the jewel (i.e. the world)!!! Swami Desika exclaims the shakti of our Lord to be marvelous!!! Though the upaadana and nimitta kaarana in the creation of the world is one and the same, we find differences among the created beings. Swami Desika explains that this is due to the Karmas (past actions). The results of such acts or Karmas are accumulated and sticks to each soul. This gets embodied in the resultant well being; being in poverty; going through various ups and downs etc. Swami Desika goes ahead to explain the tattva, hita and purushartha aspects pertaining to our sampradAyam. " Tattva " is the ultimate truth; " Hita " is the means and " Purushartha " is the final goal; The ultimate truth is the Divya Dampathi. They are the supreme tattva. They are our refuge. The word Divya Dampathi should be understood as an eternal dual. Divya Dampathi has no singular nor plural form. Hence Divya Dampathi means the divine couple as one unit. Swami addresses them as Divya Dampathi, Saranya Dampathi and Seshi Dampathi to indicate that they alone are respectively the tattva and purushartha. In the 14th Sloka of Achyuta satakam Swami Desika says that all purushas belong to the Lord and all stri's to Lakshmi. Besides the two of them there is nothing else! Swami has emphasised on the seshitvam of Divya Dampathi. Swami states that Lord along with Goddess Lakshmi is the mokshOpaya. Swami emphatically states that there is no one equal or superior to the Divya Dampathi. They are the sole refuge for all the worlds. Swami states that this is the essence of all knowledge and should always be kept in view. Swami adds that the purpose of all other knowledge is only to understand, comprehend, realise and confirm this supreme truth!!! " Kavi Taarkika Simhaaya Kalyaana guna SaalinE! SrimatE VenkateshAya VedAnta Gurave nama !! " ....To be continued! dEsikan tiruvaDigaLE SaraNam Praveena nAmni Ramanuja dasi 23nd Aug 1999

Of these, Purushas are instructed and controlled by the Lord and Stri's are instructed by Periya pirAtti. The Divya Dampathi by their own free come to such agreements. This follows the Vishnu Puranam which lays down - " dEva triyanka manushyEshu punnAmA bhagavAn hari: ! strInAmni Lakshmi: maitrEya! nAnayO: vidyatE param !! " All that is named male among Devas, animals and men is naught but Bhagavan Hari. Those who are named females are Lakshmi. There is nothing beyond them. Shri ParAsara Battar in SriGuna RatnakOsa (Sloka 34) has pointed out that while keeping some attributes like eternal youthhood etc., common between them, the Divya Dampathi have divided between themselves certain other characteristics. Thus, Our Lord and Goddess Lakshmi are the Seshi Dampathi who rule over all the male and female species. Thus other than the Divya Dampathi nobody controls and rules the universe. Hope this helps.
