" SrimAn VenaktanAthArya: kavithArkika kEsarI!

VedAnthAchArya varyO mE sannidhatthAM sadhA hrudhi " !!

Swami Desika who compressed the 24000 verses of the

Great epic and gave us Paramaarthastuti in just 10 verses

has rendered 1000 Slokas on the pAduka of our Lord. We

are in short of words to explain Swami's overall talents.

Swami says just as how sIta pirAtti was instrumental in

Sage vAlmiki bringing out the charitram so also paadhuka

itself was instrumental in Swami composing this great sahasram!

A special mention needs to be made as to how our

Swami brought in the Paadukaa Sahasram. A devotee said

that he would compose 1000 Slokas on Sri RanganAthas

thiruvadi with the title paadakamala sahasram. The devotee

questioned swami if it was possible for him to compose

thousand Hymns on the Holy Lotus feet of the Lord. Swami

performed nychyAnusandhAnam and said that he was an akinchanan

and can sing only on the paadukas which are below Lords feet

and composed the thousand on the holy sandals of the Lord.

This was the birth of extraordinary paaduka sahasram containing

information's about pAduka and about Alvar (Alvar was an amsam

of Paaduka).

Swami wrote Paadukasahasram in just one yaama. However it is

interesting to note that each verse has abundance of meanings,

which may take us years and years to comprehend and fully enjoy.

Swami himself states that in the third yaama these Slokas

poured out of his mouth like the leaves of a mango tree

which would fall down when blown by a strong breeze!

Swami adds that the reason for the Slokas to flow from his

mouth was because of the touch of the paadhuka on his head (shatAri).

Swami exclaims that he is not able to comprehend the greatness

of pAdhuka. Swami explains that there is a slight possibility to

explain the greatness of the paaduka only if the sky was the writing

paper, sea was ink and the person who speaks of the greatness was

none other than the Lord himself with thousand heads!!!

Swami states that even if he composes hundred thousand Slokas on

pAdhuka, it would still be an insignificant part of the Greatness

of paadhuka! This reveals to us that there is nothing to be amazed

by Swami's capability of composing 1000 Slokas, Swami unlimited

capabilities could have given us hundred thousand or even much more...

Swami gives us a reason as to why elders bear only the pAduka on

their head, leaving behind Adisheshan, Garudan and others. Swami

clarifies that it is because paaduka is greater than the above

mentioned.

Even the Lord washes his ThirupAdam before placing them on the

paaduka. When this is the case, how to speak of paaduka's greatness?

Speaking of dependency, Swami says that the Devas are dependent on

Rudra and Rudra depends on Brahma. Brahma in turn is dependent on Lord.

Now Swami goes to the extent of stating that the Lord himself is

dependent on paaduka => such is paadukas greatness!!

Dear Smt Praveena,

What a great kaimkaryam that you are doing to the world of Srivaishnavas! I

don't know if you have realised the rich benefits and anubhavam that you

instill in us, with your indefatigable writings, every day... every day..

without fail..

With all the troubles of being a lady, a wife, a finacial controller (at

home), also performing kaimkaryams to your husband, for his nithya

karmanushtanams, you are still able to do so much of research and come out

with such superb posts.. Blessed are we to have such Bhagawathas in this

list.. May Swami desikan bless you and your family..

Your mention of the greatness of Paduka sahasram, reminds me of another

small note that I had read in a book (which you only gave me a couple of

months back).

When Appayya DIkshithar mentioned about Swami Desikan's Paduka Sahasram, he

said " oru jaaN kattaiyil, aayiram thuLaigaL pOtta, thooppul PiLLaiyE

Pillai... (means: thooppul Pillai (Swami desikan) has made thousand holes

(composed 1000 slOkas) on just 1/2 foot pAdukAs.. )

What a Great AChAryan! There can never ever be any one equal to our Dearest

Thooppul Pillai... Evn to read the LIST of HIS WORKS, will take time (and

trouble our togues too.)

Please keep up good work..

SrimatE Gopaladesika MahadesikAya Namaha,

Dear Smt. Praveena,

Thanks for your brilliant post on the Lord's Padhukas. Adiyen is at a

loss for

words to describe the joy he derives while reading your excellent daily

notes.

Indeed, each work of Swami Desikan is bound to provide a gem of a

thought,

a unique insight into a particular aspect of Our SharaNyan and a

capsule of profound wisdom.

On this note Adiyen would like to pose the following question to

members of our group.

Why did Swami Desikan compose only one Stotram in praise of the Lord of

Seven Hills?

Adiyen eagerly looks forward to the insightful responses from our

members.

Dear Sriman Rangarajan,

Thanks for your note. Sri VNV Swamin is an extremely learned scholar.

Adiyen is in constant touch with him. Do you live in Bangalore? Sri

VNV Swamin mentioned to me that he was planning to visit Bangalore

for a day to attend a wedding and that he would be staying at Mathikere.

Adiyen is from Bangalore too.

Best Wishes,

SriMuralidhara Dasan

Dear Sri Rangaswamy :

Swami Desikan's chinthanai and salutations

of ThiruvEnakatamudayAn took many forms beyond

the magnum opus SthOthram of Daya Sathakam .Some of them

came out in the form of SlOkams of DramidOpanishad

Taathparya rathnAvaLI (slOkams 36 , 75 and 79 to cite

a few). These two slokams are the summaries of the three

great decads of NammAzhwAr ( Thiruvaimozhi 3.3 , 6.6 and

6.10 starting with the paasurams of " Ozhivil kaalamellAm ,

Maalukku Vaiyaam aLantha --,and Ulaham uNDa peruvAyA

respectively). There are a total of 52 ThiruvAimozhi

paasurams in which Swami NammAzhwAr saluted the Vaibhavam of

ThiruvEkatamudayAn . Eight of the above 52 are found in

Thiruviruttham .The remaining 44 are housed in

Thiruvaimozhi .Swami Desikan saluted Sri VenkatanAthan

following the sacred foot steps of ThirukkuruhUr

SatakOpan through magnificient Sanskrit slOkams

celebrating the anantha kalyANa guNams of

Sri SeshAdhri sEkhara Vibhu .Individual slOkams

of DramidOpanishad Saaram have also been used by

Swami Desikan to offer his MangaLAsAsanam of

Thirumalaiappan .

On this PramAthi Gaayathri Japam day , AdiyEn

thinks of the succor and support that the decad

3.3 of ThiruvAimozhi gave to Sri AlavandhAr ,

Periya Thirumalai Nampi , Sri RaamAnujar,

Sri AnanthAzhvAn , Swami Desikan and pray to

the Lord of Seven Hills to bless us all with the boon

of Bhagavath-AchArya Kaimkarya siddhi as the noblest lakshyam

of a Sri VaishNavA's life . Swami Desikan has assured us

in the 32nd and final chapter of Srimadh Rahasya Thraya

Saaram that we will attain this parama paavana siddhi

through his soul stirring words that paraphrase

Swami NammAzhwAr's prayer to ThiruvEnkatavan :

" ThALiNaik keezh ozhivil kAlamellAm udanAi

manni vazhuvilA adimai seyya vENDum naam yenra

manOrathathinpadiyE Sarva dEsa-Sarva Kaala-

SarvAvasthOchitha -Sarva Vidha -KaimkaryangaLayum

peRRu VaazhvArkaL "

In the 36th slOkam of DhramidOpanishadh Taathparya

RathnAvaLi(DTR) SlOkam , Swami Desikan summarized the 10

slOkams of this decad in his inimitable way .AdiyEn

will share this anubhavam in a future posting .This decad

is considered by our AchAryAs as the essence of

the meaning of AshtAksharam ( Thirumanthiram )and

the svarUpa vivEkam that one attains through

an understanding of the meanings of the noblest

manthram of Sriman NaarAyaNan .

In the 75th slOkam of DTR , Swami Desikan

salutes Lord SrinivAsan a la Swami NammAzhwAr

and says that ParAnkusa Naayaki was overcome

by the anantha kalyANa guNams of the AnjanAdhri

Vibhu and lost to Him her ahankAram ,mamakAram ,

dhairyam and chAthuryam ( Maalukku Vaiyam aLantha

MaNALaRkku-- paasurams). The tribute here is to

both the AasrayaNIya sthalam of ThiruvEnkatam and

the anubhava sthalam of Parama Padham .This can

be related to SaraNAgathi tattvam .

In the 79th slOkam of DTR summarizing the 6.10

decad of ThiruvAimozhi ( Ulaham uNDa PeruvAyA --),

Swami Desikan salutes Sri Timmappan of Thirumalai

as the DhvayArtha Saaram . In the first nine slOkams

of this decad starting with " UlahamuNDa PeruvAyA -- " ,

Swami NammAzhwAr completes the five angams of

Prapatthi and in the last slOkam (ahalahillEn uRayum--),

Swami performs SaraNAgathi at the lotus feet of

the Yeka sEshithva Dampathi.

To this 79th sLOkam , adiyEn would like to add the 72nd

slOkam of DTR that salutes Sri Oppilaa appan

known as the Lord of South Thiruppathi( nalkuravum --).

In this 72nd slOkam of DTR ( Sampath dhAridhrya

BhAvAth--), Swami Desikan distills the essence of

another important Prapatthi deacad. As natives of

ThiruviNNagar , adiyOnkal believe that Swami NammAzhwAr

performed his SaraNAgathi to Sri Oppilaa appan

first ( TannoppArilappan Tanthanan tanathALL nizhalE)

and then reminded ThiruvEnkatamudayAn about

His former performance of Prappatthi at

ThiruviNNagar ( " Adhik Keezh puhunthEnE " in

the past tense).

Thus we can be persudaed to think that there

are many sthuthis of Thiruvenkatavan beyond

DayA sathakam .

ThiruvAimozhi is sahasra SaakhOpanishad ,

the distillation of the essence of Saama GhAnam .

Swami Desikan composed the PaadhukhA sahasram of

the Lord who stands at Thirumalai and rests at Srirangam .

These are Swami Desikan's salutations to

Swami Sri NammAzhwAr. In his Nigama parimaLam and

DTR , DhramidOpanishadh Saaram , Swami Desikan

continued to pay his tribute to the Sri Sookthis

of NammAzhwAr .The many salutations of the object

of NammAzhwAr's sthuthis of ThiruvenakatamudayAN and

ThiruviNNagarappan found in DTR and DhramidOpanishadh

Saaram can be considered as tributes of Swami Desikan

via the Sri Sookthis of Swami Sri nammAzhwAr.

AdiyEn will continue with the DTR slOkams

on ThiruvenkatamudayAn in future postings.
