SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter III

slOkA 27

Translation : He, whose nature is deluded by egoism,

thinks about actions being done in all ways by the gunAS

belonging to prakriti , that ' I am the doer'.

Commentary : A foolish person, who does not realise that

the body is different from the soul or AtmA , thinks

that he is the doer of all activities. He does not realise

that his actions are actually done by the three gunAs or

chracteristics..sattva, rajas and tamas...belonging to

matter or prakriti.

slOka 28

Translation : ArjunA (man of mighty arms) , but he who

knows the truth about the divisions of gunAs and works,

is not attached (to gunAs), knowing that the gunAs operate

in relation to their products.

Commentary : Each person has all the three gunAs, in different

proportions. In one person there may be more of sattva gunA;

in another person there may be more of tamasa gunA and so on.

So , each person does good or bad actions , depending on the

proportion of the three gunAs in him and which gunA is

predominant etc. Thus his actions are done by gunAs only

and not by him.

A wise person who knows this truth , gives up the idea that

he is the doer; knowing that the gunAs are functioning in

their respective spheres.
