SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter III

slOkA 38

Translation : Just as fire is covered by smoke and

mirror (is covered) by dirt; just as the embryo is

covered by the bag in the womb; in the same way

this (world) is covered by desire.

Commentary : Human beings and others in this world

are covered by this desire or passion ; just as

fire is covered by smoke; just as mirror is covered

by dirt; and just as a foetus is covered in the

womb by membrane.

Just as smoke also arises along with the

fire , desire is also born along with the birth of

every being , because of the previous vAsanA.

Even if a mirror is cleaned of dirt by

a cloth , dirt accumulates again , after sometime .

Similarly even if desire is controlled now, the

desire in man arises again after sometime.

Just as the membrane covering the foetus

in the womb cannot be removed easily , the desire in

man also cannot be controlled easily.
