SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter IV

slOkA 1

Translation :

KrishnA said : I have told this imperishable yOgA

to VivasvAn , the Sun. The sun told to Manu. Manu

told Ikshvaku.

Commentary :

KrishnA : Do no think that I have now taught you

this karma yOgA , only to create enthusiasm in

you for war. I had taught this karma yOgA at the

beginning of this Manu's age to VivasvAn or the

sun-god , for the benefit of the whole world;

since this leads to bhakti yOgA , which is the

means(upAyA) for attaining mOkshA. He taught it

in turn to his son Manu and Manu taught his son

Ikshvaku.

A day of BrahmA is called a kalpA and

is equal to 4320 million years. The kalpA is

divided into 14 periods, each having a different

Manu. The present Manu is VaivasvatA , who is the

7th Manu and is the son of sun-god.
