SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter IV

slOkA 9

janma karma cha mE divyam evam yO vethi tathvatah:

tyaktvA dEham punar janma naiti mAm Eti so arjuna

arjuna - ArjunA

sah - he

yaj - who

evam - thus

vethi - knows

tathvatah: - truly

me - My

divyam - divine

janma - births

karma cha - and actions ,

naiti - does not get

punar janma - rebirths;

tyaktvA - and giving up

dEham - body

naiti - attains

mAm - Me

ArjunA, he who thus knows truly My divine births and

actions , does not get rebirths ; and giving up the

body attains Me.

Commentary : A person, who thus knows the secrets of

My divine births and My doings in this world, ( as

described in the earlier slOkAs) ; is not born again,

after this life. He attains Me at the end of his life.

By knowing the truth about My divine births,

all his sins are destroyed. He always thinks of Me with

affection and surrenders himself to Me. He takes refuge

in Me and then he attains Me at the end of his life.

(Here, a doubt may arise. It is mentioned

in the sAstrAs that only bhakti yOga and prapatti are

the means(upAyAs) for attaining mOkshA. But it is stated

in this slOkA that the true knowledge about the Lord's

avatArAs will enable a person to attain mOkshA at the

end of his life itself. Which is correct ?

Both are correct. True knowledge of the Lord's

avatArAs will not directly lead a person to mOkshA. But it

will create deep interest and desire in him to attain

mOkshA. So, he will adopt the means (upAyA) i.e bhakti

or prapatti , with so much intensity , that he will attain

mOkshA, at the end of this life.
