Guest guest
Oct 26, 1999, Chennai. SrI: SrI Lakshminrusimha ParabrahmaNE namaha SrI Lakshminrusimha divya pAdukA sEvaka SrIvaN- SatakOpa SrI nArAyaNa yateendra mahAdESIkAya namaha Dear devotees, namO nArAyaNA. Recently, there has been some mention about " kAmya karmAs " . adiyEn would like to add few words on this issue. Karma-kANda portion of the vEdAs is filled with the information about various yaj~nAs to be performed, for achieving various results like life at swarga, wealth, progeny etc. But vEdAntins who have understood the jn~Ana-kANda portion of the vEdAs dealing with the tattva-hita-purushArtam (Knowledge about Brahman etc) aspire for moksham and knows that all such yaj~nAs can be performed with sAtvIka tyAgam as bhagavad aarAdhana, without the materialistic aim. While the putrakAmEshti yAgam can be performed with the aim of attaining progeny, it can also be performed simply as bhagavad aarAdhanA (for His pleasure), without the materialistic aim. In this case, all the mantrAs present in that yaj~nam are used to perform the aarAdhanA to SrIman nArAyaNA. Thus, a prapanna can certainly perform putrakAmEshti yAgam and there is no stigma attached to the yAgam as such. ParamaikAntins only shun the materialisitic ends to be achieved using such yaj~nAs. There is also another dimension in this issue. In the chillarai rahyam (Minor Rahasya) " pradAna Satakam " , SwAmi dESikan says, " Bhagavat-bhAgavata-samruddhi yaiyum, bhakti-tattva-jn~AnaN~gaLaiyum, tadvirOdhi-pApa-nivrutti yaiyum paRRak kAmya karmam prAptamAnAlum, bhagavAn tannayEyAdal avanukku asAdhAraNarayEyAdal apEkshikkumadu pradhAnam " (96). free translation of the vivaraNam by SrI U.Ve. SrIrAmadESIkAchArya : " KarmAs done other than the purpose for attaining moksham are known as kAmya karmAs. Those who have performed prapatti for the purpose of moksham should not perform kAmya karmAs. But, when the kAmya karmAs are performed (i) for the samruddhi (development/ flourishment /improvement ??) of either BhagavAn's vibhavam (property, belongings ?) Or bhAgavathAs, (ii) for increasing one's tattva jn~Anam and bhakti, (iii) for destroting the sins (pApam kazhiya) obstructing the attainment of jn~Ana & bhakti, they (ie. the kAmya karmAs) are in accordance with one's swaroopam only. It is important that these karmAs have to be performed with prayer towards either BhagavAn (SrIman nArAyaNA) Or His close associates (nitya sUrIs) like thiru anantAzhwAn (aadi sEshan), Garuda bhagavAn and others. These shouldn't be prayed towards anya dEvatAs. " Thus it is very clear that : 1. The very performance of some yaj~nAs like Sudarsana hOmam doesn't make one unfit to be called as a paramaikAntin Or " Orthodox " follower of SrI Vaishnavam. 2. When kAmya karmAs are performed for spiritual benifits as indicated by SwAmi dESikan, it is _perfectly_ in accordance with one's swaroopam as a paramaikAntin Or Orthodox follower of SrI Vaishnavam. 3. A prapanna _should not_ ask for such spiritual benifits from anya dEvatAs. Note : The topic on " anya dEvatAs " is very important to be discussed since anya-dEvata aarAdhana is a mOksha virOdhi (as mentioned in adiyEn's recent posting also). SrI Dileepan also has putforth various important points regarding the issue of discussing this topic in this Net. This topic is certainly open for discussion in our malolan net and there is absolutely no reason to ban such a most vital topic which our AchAryAs have most mercifully dealtwith quite extensively. We are not at present going around the streets yelling that people should give up anya dEvata worship to attain moksham. This issue is afterall discussed in SrI Malolan Net, which very much has focus on these issues. All the members of SrI Malolan Net are dedicated to follow SrI Vaishnavam and the Net is there to make the teachings of our AchAryAs regarding various things be available in one form or another to the devotees. adiyEn even got a personal mail yesterday, experessing deep gratitude, (which actually belongs to SrImad Azhagiyasingar) for discussing in adiyEn's recent posting about the relative importance of the anya dEvata worship which is a moksha virOdhi (ie. though the devotee is a prapanna and does not perform anya dEvata worship, he wrote that he got much more insight in this topic and felt very happy to have understood it ; he added that he feels to have moved more closer to his dearmost SrIman nArAyaNA after attaining that insight). Thus, there is certainly a need to discuss this topic amongst us to get many subtle issues clarified and make the teachings of our AchAryAs be clearly put across (for, it is the very reason Malolan Net is present). What needs to be put across to a general public, for them to come into the fold of SrI Vaishnavam is another issue. In general, what to be spoken depends upon the audience and one has to make proper judgement, based on the guideliness given by our AchAryAs/sAstrAs. One's conduct, character, knowledge, devotion etc matters a lot and is extremly important for a SrI Vaishnava. But, this doesn't mean that one should only speak about things like developing good character etc and never open the mouth about anya dEvata worship. SrI Dileepan has already explained well regarding this. Also, there is absolutely no reason for one to express a big fuss in discussing some (important) details about anya dEvata worship to the extent of seeking a ban on this topic in this Net. adiyEn rAmAnuja dAsan ananthapadmanAbha dAsan (alias Anand Karalapakkam) krishNArpaNam
