SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

Chapter IV

slOkA 13

 

chAtur varnyam mayA srshtam guna karma vibhAgasah

tasya kartAram api mAm viddhy akartAram avyayam

 

Translation :

chAtur varnyam - The four castes

srshtam - were created

mayA - by Me

vidhAgasah - based on the divisions of

guna karma - gunA and activities

kartAram api - Although Iam the creator

tasya - of this division,

viddhy - know

mAm - Me

akartAram - as not the creator

avyayam - and unchangeable.

 

The four castes were created by Me based on the

the divisions of gunA and activities. Although I am

the creator of this division, know Me as not the

creator and unchangeable.

 

Commentary : The system of the four castes was created

by Me, according to the different proportions of gunAs,

i.e sattva,rajas and tamas; and also according to the

activities like self-control, in accordance with the

various gunAs.

The whole universe starting from Brahma and

ending with grass , along with this system of four castes,

was created by Me. The universe is protected by Me only

and is destroyed by Me only.

I am the maker of this system. I am the Creator.

But I am also not the maker of this distinction; since this

distinction is based on the proportions of gunAs and

corresponding activities.
