Questions on vaaraNam aayiram

Sri Lakshmi nrisimha divya paduka sevaka

srivan satakopa sri narayana yatindra mahadesikaya nama:

As i was reading through the meanings of vaaraNa aayiram, i was stuck at the 9th

paasuram, namely..

 

varicilai vaaLmugathth ennai maar thaam vanthittu

yerimugam paarithth ennai munne niRuththi

arimugan accuthan kai mel en kai vaiththu,

pori mugan thatta kanaak kanden thozhee naan.

 

Per Sri Sadagopan's translations ( taken from the hand out we rec'd in the NAMA

conference, Denver, 1997)....

" My elder brothers, who have eye-brows like the bow and glittering faces, lit

the sacrificial fire and made me stand in front of the fire altar. They asked me

to place my hand over the hand of my Lord, who never foresakes His devotees

(Achyuthan) and He is the Lord Narasimhan as well. Then, one of my elder

brothers took a few handfuls of parched grain (pori) and put them in my hand for

the sake of offering those grains to the holy fire (laaja homam)...thus, indeed,

had I, the dream, O dear friend! "

 

Here, Andal refers to " my Elder Brothers " . I must confess that my memory is

extremely bad, and knowledge in our Samradhayam is next to zero, hence pardon my

question. Who are these " Elder brothers " that Andal refers to? I was under the

impression that Andal's birth was a Divine one, and if so, are these brothers,

that she refers to, either Periya alwar's sons (i do not remember reading that

he had sons) or her cousins?

 

On a slightly different note, my admiration/love for Andal only increases

exponenetially, when i read the previous verse..

 

immaikkum ezh ezh piravikkum parravaan,

nammaiu daiyavan naarayanan nambi

semmai yudaiya thiru kaiyaal thaal parri

ammi mithikka kanaak kanden thozhee naan.

 

Sri Sadagopan's translation>>

" The lord Narayana, the perfect one, the only refuge for all souls here (in this

birth) and in all seven fold births, and the only Master of all of us made me

touch the grind stone (ammi) with my foot, i.e, catching hold of my toe by His

glorious and reddish hand of supreme splendor--thus, indeed, had i the dream, o

my friend! " .

 

Andal not only has a dream of marrying Perumal, but also accomplishes something

no one can even dream of. In the process of touching the grind stone, Andal gets

Perumal to bow down, touch and lift her toe. Its amazing that this innocent and

sweet girl, gets Perumal Himself to bow to her in her dream and touch her toe,

something that we would hardly even think or dream or consider. Are there other

instances wherein Alwars in particular other great bhakthas have had similar

experiences or dreams? How could Perumal have resisted this true love and

devotion from our favorite Andal, little wonder that HE gladly accepted Her.

 

Since, our Acharyan, HH Srimad Azhagiya Singar is drowning us in the meanings of

the Sri Madhura Kavi Alwar's Kanninun Siruthambhu, my worthless mind wonders

what joy it will experience as and when HE talks in depth about Vaaranam aayiram

and ofcourse, Amalan adipiraan.

Its indeed a bhagyam to be a follower of this great Sampradhayam.

In answer to your question on the Laaja Homam

or poRi Tattal Ceremony in Vaidhika Marriages,

the reference to the elders of ANDAL is as follows :

 

(1) Vedic Hindu marriage ceremonies have Laaja Homam

as an integral part of the VivAham just as PaaNugrahaNam ,

Saptha Pathi , Ammi mithitthal et al (Rg Vedam 10th KhANDam ).

The descriptions are archived in the Bhakthi list

archives with corresponding Veda manthrAs .Incidentally,

ThirumAngalyam ceremony is not found in Veda Manthrams.

It came about later and has taken a very important role

(Maangalya DhAraNam , Ghetti MeLam et al) .SAPTHA PATHI

( WALKING AROUND THE SACRED FIRE HOLDING THE HAND

OF THE HUSBAND IS THE DEFINING CEREMONY FOR CONSUMATED

WEDDINGS A LA VEDAM . That is why , you do not come across

references toMaangalya DhAraNam ceremony in either

VaaraNamAyiram or in Kamban's description of

SithA PirAtti's ThirumaNam at Mithilai with

Sri Raamachandra.Ammim Mitthitthal ,walk around

the fire , Arundhathi paartthal are there as well.

 

(2) About the elders of ANDAL , the legend is

that PeriyAzhwAr had 5 sons before ANDAL's

avathAram at his ThuLasi garden . The reference

is Sri MaNavALa Maamuni's " Anjukkuddikku oru

santhathiyAi , AzhwArkaL tancheyalai vinji niRkum

tanmayaLAi , pinjAi pazhuthAlai , patthiyudan NaaLum

vazutthAi manamE makinzhndhu " .One intrepretation

of anjukkudi is that Andal was a santhathi in

the family of five sons of PeriyAzhwAr.

 

(3) Whether Andal had elder brothers or not,Sje

is following scrupulously the successive steps

of the Vedic VivAham Ceremony and therefore

dreams and lets the ThOzhis know of the Laaja Homam

part with the participation of her elders. The reference

is also to the ( male) AzhwArs , who preceeded Her.
