SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter IV

slOkA 16

kim karma kim akarmeti kavayopyatra mohitAh

tat te karma pravakshyami yaj jnatvA moksyase shubAt

Translation :

kavayopy - Even wise people

mohitah - are confused

atra - here

iti - as to

kim - what is

karma - action

kim - and what is

akarma - knowledge.

pravakshyAmi- I will tell

te - you

tat - that

karma - action

jnatvA - knowing

jaj - which

moskshyase - you will be released

ashubhAt - from ill fortune

Even wise people are confused as to what is action

and what is knowledge. I will tell you that action

knowing which you will be released from samsArA.

Commentary : Even learned people are confused about the

nature of karma or action to be done by a seeker of

mOkshA. They do not have the correct knowledge about the

nature of the soul, in relation to these activities. Such

a knowledge that the soul is only an agent for all

activities; and is controlled by the Lord; is called here

as " akarmA " i.e other than karmA .i.e knowledge.

I will now teach you the nature of karmA and

also knowledge (akarmA) , referred to above. Knowing it

and performing karma yOgA , you will be released from the

bondage of samsArA.

senthil
