SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter IV

slOkA 19

yasya sarve samArambhAh kAma-sankalpa-varjitAh

jnAnAgni-dagdha-karmAnam tam Ahuh panditam budhAh

Translation:

yasya - He, whose

sarve - all

samArambhAh - actions

varjitAh - are free from

kAma - desire for fruit ,

sankalpa - and wrong notion that the body is the

same as the soul:

budhAh - the wise people

Ahuh - call

tam - him

panditam - a learned man,

karmanAm - whose previous karmAs

dagdha - are burnt

agni - in the fire

jnAna - of knowledge

He, whose all actions are free from desire for fruit,

and wrong notion that the body is the same as the soul:

the wise people call him a learned man, whose previous

karmAs are burnt in the fire of knowledge.

Commentary : A person who seeks mOkshA, should do all nitya,

naimittika and kamya karmAs; and also collect materials etc.,

for doing these karmAs; without any desire for fruits.

He does not have the wrong notion that the body

and soul are the same. He understands that the soul is

different from prakriti and its gunAs. His previous karmAs

have been burnt by the fire of knowledge about the true

nature of the soul. Wise people, therefore, call him as an

intelligent person.

tyaktvA karma-phalAsangam nitya-trpto nirAshrayah

karmany abhipravrttopi naiva kinchit karOti sah

Translation :

tyaktvA - Giving up

sangam - attachment

phal - to fruits

karma - of action

nitya-trpto - and always satisfied,

nirAshrayah - and without depending on anything,

sah - he,

abhipravrtt api - even if engaged

karmani - in action,

naiva karOti - does not indeed do

kinchit - anything.

Giving up attachment to fruits of action and always

satisfied , and without depending on anything , he ,

even if engaged in action , does not indeed do

anything.

Commentary : A person should perform actions without any

desire for fruits. He should be contended and happy always

with his soul. He should remain without a sense of

dependence on anything else , including his body. He

should realise that the body is perishable. So , he

should not have any attachment to his body.

Such a person , although engaged fully in

action, really does not do any work at all. His

concentration all the time is in obtaining real

knowledge.
