- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter IV

slOkA 21

nirAshir yata-chithAtmA tyakta-sarva-parigrahah

sAriram kEvalam karma kurvan nApnoti kilbisam

Translation :

nirAshir - Free from desire,

yata-chithAtmA - controlling intellect and mind,

tyakta - giving up

sarva-parigrahah - all possessions,

kurvan - doing

kEvalam - only

karma - actions

sAriram - pertaining to the body,

na Apnoti - (one) does not attain

kilbisam - the sin (of samsArA)

Free from desire , controlling intellect and mind ,

giving up all possessions , doing only actions

pertaining to the body , (one) does not attain the

sin (of samsArA).

Commentary : A person should not have any desire for fruits

(as already stated). He should have his mind and buddhi

(intellect) firmly under control. He should give up the

feeling of possession and ownership , in regard to the

material objects which he possesses.

Such a person does not incur any sin. He does

not get involved in samsArA; by doing work, necessary for

maintaining the body and the like. He sees the soul by

karma yOgA of this kind; without the aid of jnAna yOgA.
