SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

- translation by Sri.V.N.Gopala Desikan

Chapter IV

slOkA 22

yadrchchA-lAbha-santushto dvandvAtito vimatsarah

samah siddhAv asiddhau cha krtvApi na nibadhyate

santushto - Satisfied

lAbha - with what is got

yadrchchA - by chance,

atitah - rising above

dvandva - the pairs of opposites ,

vimatsarah - without ill-will (towards anyone),

samah - treating as equal

siddhau - success

asiddhau cha - and failure

krtvA api - even by doing all actions,

na nibadhyate - (one ) is not bound (by samsArA).

Satisfied with what is got by chance , rising above

the pairs of opposites, without ill-will(towards any

one) , treating as equal success and failure; even by

doing all actions, (one) is not bound (by samsArA).

Commentary : A person should be satisfied with whatever is

got without efforts, for sustaining the body. He should

not be affected by pleasure and pain, heat and cold etc.,

until he completes karma yOgA.

He should not have hatred towards others. He

should realise that whatever unpleasant thing has happened

to him is due to his own past karmAs; and others are not

responsible for the same. He should not be affected by

success or failure in war and such other things. Then he

is not bound by samsArA even after performing action; even

if he doesnot do jnAna yOgA.

slOkA 23

gata-sangasya muktasya jnAnAvasthitha-chetasah

yajnAyAcharatah karma samagram praviliyate

gata-sangasya - Free from attachment ,

muktasya - liberated,

chetasah - with mind

avasthitha - rooted

jnana - in knowledge,

Acharatah - by doing everything

yajnAya - for the sake of yAjnA

samagram - all

karma - his previous karmAs

praviliyate - are destroyed.

Free from attachment , liberated , with mind rooted

in knowledge, by doing everything for the sake of

yajnA, all his previous karmAs are destroyed.

Commentary : A person should give up attachment to all

worldly objects. His mind should concentrate only on

the knowledge regarding his soul. He should give up the

feeling of ownership of property, cattle and so on.

He should do yajnA and other works, as

described earlier, for the pleasure of the Lord. Then

all his old karmAs, which are the cause of his bondage

are fully destroyed.

adiyEn,

balaji
