As I understand there are Two reasons behind this composition : 1. Popularly known, Swamy Desikar is said to have composed Sri Sudarshaanshtakam to invoke the blessings of the lord for the sake of curing people of a certain epidemic. 2.Swamy Desikan intended to compose 'Paramathabhangam', a book with deep import to combat the false ideology of rival schools of relegious thought. To ensure success in his efforts to overcome the oppponents through the grace of Lord Sudarshana, the object of his worshp, and te one to confer unfailing victory, Swami Desikan invokes his blessing through the Sudarshanaashtakam, a rare gem of prayer. ===================== Logically thinking, I have not found a clue or a hint in the entire Sudarshanaashtakam, which denotes worship for the sake of curing ailments/epidemics. Moreover we pray to Lord Dhanvantari for good physical health for the sake of studying the scriptures. sharire jarjari bhUte vyadhigkraste kalebhare oushadham jannavIthoyam vaidhyO narayanOhari: || The above hymn is invoked for curing an ailment/epidemic, to obtain the Divine Blessings of Lord Sriman Narayana as VaidhyO narayanOhari: (VaidhyO meaning Doctor in Sanskrit) This beign the case, Sudarshanaashtakam would not have been composed by kavi-tArkika simhan (The lion among Logicians - Swami Desikar) for the sake of curing epidemics. Morover, Swami Desika extrapolates the Idea presented in Sudarshanaashtakam in his later work Shodashayuddha Stotram. Shodashayuddha (16 - Shodasha) Stotram describes the greatness of the 16 weapons of Lord Sudarshanar.Swami Desika prays to lord Sriman Narayana who enshrined as Sudarshanar,to bless him(Swami Desika) for the success of Paramathabhangam. In conclusion, There is no support found for REASON 1,even in the Sudarshanaashtakam. But a vast amount of support for REASON 2 is found in the Sudarshanaashtakam itself and Shodashayudda Sthotram as well. adiyEn invites the opinion of other bhaktas in this matter. dwijathuskam idham prabhUta sAram pathathAm venkatanAyaka pranItham vishamEpi manOrath: pradhAvann na vihanyEth rathAngaduryaguptaha: || Thanks and Regards, adiyEn mAlOla narsimha dAsan, mAlOlan cadAmbi Thousands of Stores.
