Guest guest
Srimathe Srivansatakopa sri Vedantha desika yateendra maha desikaya nama: Sethu-Part II In this part, adiyen would like to take readers through Sri Desika sreesookthis relating to the Sethu, principally the VegAsEthu Stotram,in which numerous beautiful references have been made to the Sonna vannam seida PerumAl. The Emperuman at this divyadesam(Thiruvekkha) was responsible for stemming the fury of Saraswathi, who, enraged at her husband’s(Chaturmukha Brahma) attempt to perform an Aswamedha YagA without her, took the form of the roaring river Vegavathi ,and rushed down to destroy the YagA. Then YatOktakAri Perumal himself lay across the river’s path as a Sethu and prevented the AswamedhA from certain destruction, thus earning the sobriquet “VegA sEthu”.. This episode is glorified by Swami Desikan in 10 beautiful slokAs,a few of which are reproduced below. ‘EeshtE gamayitum pAram Esha sethu:abhangura: Yetra sAraswatam srota: visrAmyati vishrunkalam.’ Both in letter and import, this sloka follows the Upnashadic dictum”Amrutasya Esha Sethu:”.Swami Desikan says here that this Divine Dam is indestuctible and quite capable of conveying us to the other side,viz.,Moksha. In an inimitable play on the words “Saraswatam Srotha:”,Sri Nigamantha guru conveys a double meaning-1)This Sethu put an end to the angry flow of Saraswathi and 2)All words, indicating anything and everything in this world, ultimately rest in Emperuman ,as He forms the AntaryAmi of all sentient and non-sentient beings, which form his Sareeram. In the following slokas, Swami Desikan endearingly addresses Sri YatOktakArti as “JagadEka Sethu:”-the one and only such Bridge or dam in the world ,capable of conveying long- suffering mortals across the turbulent seas of SamsArA. Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam also refers to the “Jagatassethu:”in this context. Lest anyone have even a lingering doubt about the identity of this Sethu, Thooppul Pillai gives a Thirunamam to this sethu by calling it “Vishnu Sethu:”in the following slokam. By the vyutpatti of this nama,(Visateeti Vishnu:) this can be taken to mean that this unique Bridge is all-pervading and is available at all places and times, without Desa,Kala,Vastu paricchEdam, for the samsarika jeevas to cross over to Sri Vaikuntam. The other reference in this Stotram to the topic of our discussion is in the seventh sloka, where this Emperuman is described as “Sathamakha Mani Sethu”.The beautiful blue-black form of Sri YatoktakAri Perumal , in his sesha paryanka, lying across the Vegawati, resembles a Dam made completely of Indra Neela Mani. Sri Desikan is so enamoured of the Sethu theme, that it occurs at many more places in his stotras. To mention a few, the Sri Devanayaka Panchasat, while describing the Angapratyanga Soushtavam of Sri Adiyavarkku Meyyan, and particularly His NasikA, says “NityOditai:nigama nissvasitai:tavaishA NasA nabaschara patE nayanAbdi Sethu:” What a beautiful comparison- each of Emperuman’s divine eyes, long, broad and deep, resembles an ocean , (KariavAgi,pudai parandu, milirndhu ,sevvariyOdi,neenda app periayavAya kangaL)and His Nose, like a beautiful bridge, separates the two oceans. This is indeed Kavi Simham at his best. The other reference in Sri Stuti is to a “Dharma Sethu”(in the 19th sloka),where Swami says that KainkaryArthis perform all kainkaryam solely for the pleasure of ThAyAr and Emperuman, and in this process ,the various Vaidika KriyAs stand as a Sethu, preventing any ullanghanam of Sastra MaryadA. Much more than Sriya:pati, adiyen would aver that the term Sethu suits our Acharyas , for they are the pratyaksha and jangama sethus, toiling night and day to rescue baddha jeevas like us from the anadi karma pravAham and conveying us safely at the haven of the Divya Dampati CharanAravindam. It is they (Acharyas) who impart to us the secret mantras (the rahasya trayam) that unlock the gates to the Divine Bridge. And this is one of the rare bridges that does not collect any ‘toll’. -dasan,sadagopan. Srimathe Sree Lakshminrusimha divya padukasevaka Sreevansatakopa Sri Narayana yateendra maha desikaya nama:. Guest guest
Dear Shri Sadagopan Iyengar: It was a nice summary on sethu. Thanks for the wonderful articles you contribute from time to time. However, in your compilation I did not find the slokam from Daya satakam included. (KrupE kruta ... vybhajyata saritpatihi.... prashama hEtunA sEtunA). Swami includes the sEtu as one of the principal upakAram of Daya devi during RamAvataram.
