Guest guest
Dear SrI MAlOlan CadAmbi, The term mAyA denotes mUla prakruthi and jgnyAnam (sankalpam etc). Refer the Sruti-smruthies " mAyAm thu prakruthim vidyAth mAyinam thu mahESwaram " and " sambhavAmyAthmamAyayA " . The term mAyA as per YAska's lexicon means " knowledge " . Bhagavath rAmAnuja explains " sambhavAmyAthmamAyayA " as follows: " AathmamAyayA AathmIyayA mAyayA | " mAyA vayunam jgnyAnam " ithi jgyAna paryAya: athra mAyA-Sabda: | thathA cha abhiyuktha prayOga: 'mAyayA sathatham vEthi prANinAm cha SubhASubham' ithi | AathmIyEna jgnyAnEna Aathma-sankalpEna ithyartha: | .... ....Aathma-sankalpEna dEvAdirUpa: sambhavAmi | " The term mAyinam, mahA mAya: (mAyan) denotes SrIman NArAyaNa: as he is the niyAmaka of the mUla prakruthi and has the sankalpa-viSEshams by which he incarnates and does wonderful divine sports which are beyound the reach of all words. The mUla-prakruthi, which is called as mAyA is the SArIram of SrIman NArAyaNa. (Refer the SarIra-Athma-bhAvam). Sankalpa-viSishta: is SrIman NArAyaNa: mAyA NEVER means mithyA-illusion/falsehood. But it only means that it creates wonder (marvel) to all. It is a reality - thathvam. The advaitin's imaginations about mAya as mithyA etc are refuted by the Sruthi itself clearly. See " mAyanai mannum vadamathurai maindanai " , " mAmAyan mAdhavan vaikuntan " , " mAyan maNivaNNan nennale vAi nErndAn " , " vallAnai mAyanai pAdElO rempAvAi " where in the divine TiruppAvai, this term occurs four times! This name has got lot of significance. If time permits, I will write more about the mAya Sabdam. Thanks & Regards M.S.HARI rAmAnuja dAsan (mshari) ================================================================= Malolan Cadambi <mcadambi wrote: sri: srimathe ramanujaya namaha srimathe nigamantha mahadesikaya namaha Dear Bhaktas, My friend (an advaitin) asked me how maya was understood in our sampradayam. I asked him to study Satadushani/Paramatha Bhangam of Swami Desikan. However, I would appreciate it if any bhakta could provide a small exposition on how maya is interpreted in our sampradayam.
