Tell Me More Section on PeriyAzhwAr's prabhandhams

****************************************************

ThiruppallANDu of PeriyAzhwar and PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi

are the two prabhandhams of this AzhwAr.Together , they

constitute 473 of the Divine collect of Four thousand.

The meanings of the 11 paasurams of ThruppallANDu are

summarized below( Dr.K.C.VaradAchAri's translation):

(1)For many years and everlasting years and many thousands

of years and crores of hundreds of thousands of years let Thine

red feet's beauty be protected ! Oh Lord of emerald blue

hue with shoulders that vanquished the wrestlers !

PallANDu to You !

(2) Let Thou along with ourselves , Thine inseperable

servants live everlasting years! Let Her (Sri) adorning

Thee as ornament resting on Thine right chest , live for

everlasting years ! Let the luminous blazing sharp disc

in Thine right hand , which is capable of annihilating

foes be preserved for ever lasting years . PallANDu

to Thine conch (paanchajanyam) whose sound pierces

through the clanging din of weapons in battle .

(3) Oh Ye who are fit to do service and are ready , come and

carry the mud and fragrance (for God's worship). We will not

admit into our fold , those who serve others( kings and emperors)

for food .For in seven births , we have not been serving any other.

We have sung eternal years to Him (RaamA) , who in battle

utterly destroyed LankA , the seat of rAkshasAs.

(4) Come Ye and join us , giving up desire for everything

else, before being lost in the world of sorrow, those who

are having a mind to come and join us. Come with a mind to

chant with devotion , " Namo NaarAyaNAya " (Surrender to

NaarAyaNAya) so that the country side and the town may know.

Sing Ye eternal life to the Lord!

(5) Oh Ye who belong to the community that serves the Lord

Master of the senses(HrishIkEsA) , who is the Ruler of all

the worlds , who uprooted the whole host of the asurAs , come

and touching His feet utter His (occult) names, abandoning

the old grooves and giving up all sense of I and Mine , sing

" Let there be thousands of years of life for Him " .

(6)Myself, my father , hi father and grandfather , for several

generations are doing all services continously , to Him ,

who in the hour(star of) ThiruvONam (SravaNam) , slew

the foe taking the form of Man-Lion ,and we shall sing to

our heart's content , " Eternal Life for Thousand years to Him " .

(7) All our families have to serve Thee , who art the abode of

the Disc that has red luminosity greater than those of

the celestial lights. Long life eternal do we sing to Thee,

who art the Master , who ordered the Disc to cut asunder

the thousand shoulders of BaaNAsuran , the master of an army

capable of wonderful warfare ,such that blood flowed out of them.

(8) I sing everlasting years to Thee, who grantest me excellent

ghee-mixed food, excellent service , beetel nuts filling my hands ,

flower garland to adorn my neck , ear-rings for my ears ,

sandal-paste for my body , and who art capable of making me pure ,

and who has the foe of hooded serpents for thine ensign (GarudA).

(9)Wearing the cloth , which Thou hast worn and discarded ,

taking the food remaining after Thou has eaten , wearing

the garland of TuLasi that has adorned Thee and given to me ,

thus do we , worshippers of Thy feet ,performing assidously

the tasks allocated to us in which-ever directions ,

sing eternal years to Thee , who art lying on the luminous

serpent , during the period of ThiruvONam.

(10) On the day when , Oh Lord , we were connected with

the word (mantram) that made us Thine slaves (inseparable

from Thee) , then itself there resulted to us Thine slaves

renunciation of all attachments. To Thee do I sing eternal

years , who was born on an auspiciousday in MathurA , and

who broke the bow and danced on the head of the five-hooded

serpent fierce.

(11) Like Selva-Nambi , faultless , ruler of the people of

jewels , ThirukkOttiUr , a hill of pride and lord of wealth ,

am I Thine eternal slave. Uttering ccorrectly , " Surrender

to NaarAyaNA " and pronouncing Thine many names , O Lord ,

who art pure in myriad respects, I shall sing to Thee

eternal years, eternal years.

B. PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi

**************************

There are 462 Paasurams in this Prabhnadham in

34 decads.Normally , each decad has 10 to 11 Paasurams.

When PeriyAzhwAr attempts to describe the beauty of

the baby Krishnan from foot to head ( paadhAthi kEsAntham),

he could not contain his joy and spills over to 21 paasurams

( Decad 1.2).

The commentary for all paasurams except the last 40 of

PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi by PeriyavAcchAn PiLlai

were consumed by white ants. Hence ,MaNavALa MaamunigaL

wrote a scholarly commentary to replace the lost one. There

are additional commentaries for this prabhandham by Utthamur

Swamy and others.

Sage ParAsarar in his PurANa rathnam (Sri VishNu PurANam)

has covered KrishNa charithram in the 5th canto only.

Sukha Brahmam has covered KrishNAvathaara Leelais in

the 10th canto of his Srimath BhAgavatham. Both described

the KrishNa leelais like a charithram . PeriyAzhwAr entered

into the stories and took the part of YasOdhA and enjoyed

the Lord's leelais as His mother and elsewhere took on

the role of the love-stricken Gopis and engaged in

Bhagavath GuNAnubhavam. He thus surpassed the anubhavams of

Sages like Sage ParAsara and Sukha Brahmam. He was GarudAmsar

and carried the Lord during the Bharatha yuddham as His

chariot at Kuru KshEthram. He heard GithOpanishad from

the lips of PaarthasArathy there. PeriyAzhwAr's daughter

refers to this as " Meymai PeruvArthai Vittuchitthar

kEttiruppAr " . Here " Vaarthai " referes to Thiru Manthram.

" peru Vaarthai " is the manthra rathnam , Dhvayam; " Meyami

Peru Vaarthai " is the Charama slOkam of Bhagavath GithA.

Such is the greatness of PeriyAzhwAr . Andal accepted Her

father as Her AchAryan for that reason.
