Sri Kulasekhara Azhwar thirunakshatram and establishment of Sri Ahobila Muth Inc

Dear Bhagavatas,

 

On March 12th, 1995, Sri Ahobila Muth, Inc was established in the USA, per

the instruction of Srimad Azhagiya Singar. That day was the thirunakshatram

of Sri Kulasekhara Azhwaar. To commemorate the 6th anniversary of this

establishment, adiyen is posting a translation of an article by Sri Injemedu

Azhagiya Singar published in Sri Nrsimha Priya in the forties. This article

was reprinted in the saptati malar commemorating Srimad Azhagiya Singar's

70th thirunakshatram in 1996. What follows is part I of the article.

 

In this world, this Bharata Khandam alone is a Punya Bhumi. It is filled

with Punya Kshetrams and Punya teerthams. This is the land where Sri Rama,

Sri Krishna, Sri Nrsimha and other incarnations had their pastimes. This is

the land that has been glorified by Rishis, Azhwars and other Acharyas.

This is the land in which supremely holy scriptures such as the Geetha made

their appearance. As this land is supremely holy, the Lord of all takes

steps to protect this land, then and there at the very scent of danger. Out

of His Supreme mercy, He desired that all should surrender to Him. This

timing of His (next) incarnation is way into the future. Therefore, out of

His great mercy He is using sadAcharyas to fulfill His purposes. From the

day mlecchas and others occupied this land, He has taken great pains to

ensure that there is no shortcoming in the sanAtana dharma, that has been so

carefully established.

 

In the year Kali Yuga 4480, Siddharthi year, Purattasi month (Sept/Oct),

Sukla paksham,panchami, jyeshTha (Kettai) nakshatram, Thursday during dhanur

lagnam, in the city of thirunArAyaNapuram, a great son complete with all

AchArya lakshanams incarnated to Sri KeSavAchArya Swami, as a result of His

intense austerities.

 

Upon seeing the brilliance and auspiciousness that shone forth from this

child, all the elders rejoiced. JAtakarmam, naamakaraNam and other

samskaarams were performed as ordained in the Saastras. The child was named

Srinivaasan. anna prASnam, sauLam, aksharAbhyaasam, upanayanam etc., were

performed as per prevailing rules of those times. After this the child's

Vedic education was started.

 

His father, Sri Kesavacharya Himself did Pancha samskaaras for Him. He also

taught Him thiruvoymozhi and other divya Prabandhas. Sri Srinivaasachariar

became a brilliant scholars well versed in sAmAnya Saastras. He rivalled

Swami Nammazhwar, the recipient of the munificient grace of Sriman Narayana,

in Bhakti and knowledge. Seeing all this Sri Kesavachariar wanted His son

to learn secrets of our sampradaayam from a qualified Acharya. He

instructed His son Sri Srinivaasachariar to approach Sri VaradAchariar in

Kanchipuram also known as Ghatikasatham Ammal. The latter was the grandson

of Nadadur Ammal.

 

Sri Varadaachariar Swamy was extremely pleased to hear this appeal from Sri

Srinivasachariar. He blessed him profusely and taught him all darSana

granthas like Sribhashyam and Srimad Rahasya Traya Saaram. In addition, He

also taught Sri Srinivasachariar little known secrets taught by

Bhashyakaarar.

 

In this way Sri Srinivasachariar Swamy became a MahAjnAtA and a Pancha kAla

PravaNar (one who strictly follwed the rites of abhigamanam, upAdAnam, ijyA,

swAdhyAya and yoga on a daily basis during the times allotted for them). He

was also serving the lotus Feet of PEraruLAlan daily. The most munificient

lakshmi nrsimhan of Ahobilam was delighted to see the fruits of His labor in

Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy. He made Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy worship

Him in his (Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy's) dream, and then instructed him as

follows: " Come to my Ahobilam. I shall bless you with turiyASramam

(sannyAsam). "

 

The next morning, Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy narrated this dream to his

Acharya. Sri VaradAchaariar Swamy considered this dream and then said:

" This is God's instruction. Proceed to Ahobilam. " Sri Srinivaasachariar

Swamy accepted this instruction and proceeded to Ahobilam after taking leave

of VaradarAja Perumal of Kanchipuram.

 

Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy took a holy dip in the BhavanASi and completed

his oblations. With great excitement, He proceeded to the temple of

Azhagiya Singar. With numerous prostrations, Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy

did mangalASAsanam of Azhagiya Singar.

 

Azhagiya Singar appeared to Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy in the form of a

Sannyaasi. He did PrEsha mantra UpadESam. He bestowed Sri

Srinivaasachariar Swamy with kASAyam and tridanDam from Sri Ramanuja

sannidhi. He blessed Sri Srinivaasachariar Swamy with the daasya naama of

Sri SaThakOpa Jeer. Azhagiya Singar blessed Sri SaThakOpa Jeer with thiru

Sankhu and thiruvAzhi that He Himself carried. He then instructed Sri

SaThakOpa Jeer as follows: " Go to every town and village and distribute the

means emancipation from material life. Give the people the mantras and the

meaning of the mantras. Make the people follow the viSishThadvaita

siddhantam as propounded by nammAzhwAr, RAmAnujAcharya and Swami nigamAnta

mahAdESikan. " THIS INSTRUCTION IS THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT

OF SRI AHOBILA MUTT.
