Srimate SrivanSatakopa Sri Vedanta Desika Yatindra

Mahadesikaya Nama:

Teliyatha Marai Nilangal Teligindrome-14

The eleventh mantra of MahaNarayanopanishad, which

also occurs with slight variations in the SvEtAsvatara

and Katha Upanishads, reiterates the imperceptibility

of Paramatma to human faculties. No human eye can ever

see Him nor behold His glorious form.

" na sandrisE tishttati roopam asya, na chakshushA

pasyati kascha nynam "

That Emperuman is beyond the grasp of human organs is

reflected in the following lines of Tiruvaimozhi-

" kaNgal kAndarku ariyanAi "

" katkilee "

" kANalum aaGAn "

" kANbAr aar em eesan kaNNanai "

" katkariya piraman sivan indiran endru ivarkatkum

katkariya kaNNan " etc.

However, a Paramatma who always remains beyond human

perception is like a full moon in a desert, with

nobody to appreciate its beauty. Hence, in His

infinite mercy and soulabhya, He makes Himself visible

and attainable to those who meditate on Him with

undistracted minds. Such yogis , adopting Bhakti or

Prapatti, and with Him as their sole refuge, are

able to see Him in their minds.

Thus the Upanishad says, " HridA maneeshA manasAbhi

kluptO ya Enam vidu: amruta: te bhavanti "

This calls for total concentration on Emperuman, to

the exclusion of all other ephemeral human

relationships, the type practiced by Sri Nammazhwar- "

chintayAlum sollAlum seigaiinAlum dEvapiranaiyE tandai

tAi endru adainthA vaN kurugoor satakopan " . This

pasuram is perhaps the basis for Sri Alavandar's

sreesookti " MatA pita yuvataya: tanayA: vibhooti:

sarvam yadEva niyamEna mad anvayAnAm " .

That Emperuman can be seen with such undiluted

concentration , and that those who know Him thus

attain liberation from bondage, is brought out by the

following panktis of Tiruvaimozhi-

" patrudai adiyavarkku eLiyavan "

" karutthukku nandrum eLiyanAi "

" kaNNuLLE nirkum kAdanmayAl thozhil "

" en KaNNanai kandukondu nilai petru ennenjam

petrathu needuyirE "

" arindu arindu tEri teri yAn enadu AviyuLLe

nirainda gyAna moortiyAyai ninmalamAga vaitthu

pirandum setthum nindru idarum pEdamai teerndu

ozhindEn " etc.

The Upanishad stops with saying that Paramatma can be

seen by perseverent yOgis in their minds'eye: it is

silent on the form and shape of the Parabhrahmam that

is seen thus. This omission is rectified by Kari

Maran, who describes vividly, for our benefit, the

Divine Form that framed itself in his mind.

First and foremost, Azhwar sees Him( in his mind's

vision) accompanied by PirAti, who is His inseperable

consort. He describes his vision thus-

" oNtodiyAL Tirumagalum neeyumE nilA nirpa

kanda sathir kandu ozhindEn adainthen un tiruvadiyE "

Here is an enchanting description of Bhagawan's

tirumEni as seen through the bhakti-filled mind of

Parankusa Nayaki ( " en nenjinAl nOkki kANeer " )-

" sanginOdum nEmiyOdum tAmarai kaNgalOdum, senkani vAi

ondrinOdum "

" minnum noolum kundalamum mArvil tiru maruvum

mannu pooNum nAngu tOlum "

" vendri villum tandum vALum chakkaramum sangum "

" tokka sOdi tondai vAyum neeNda puruvangalum, takka

tAmarai kaNNum "

" kOla neeL kodi mookkum…..neela mEnium nAngu tOLum " .

Such is the indescribable beauty of Emperuman's

aprAkrita diva mangala vigraham that , after a few

futile attempts at an adequate description, Sri

Nammazhwar gives up and says " en nenjinAl nOkki

kANeer " .

To be continued-dasan,sadagopan.
